Most MD recorders will do the job quite nicely at a reasonable price. Avoid compression, only 80' per disc.DoKtor Spiggy wrote:If I wanted to buy a contraption to tape a gig for a good quality recording, what handheld implement should I aquire?Any ideas?
Most of all : get a good mike. That's the difference maker.
If you're rich, get a DAT recorder.

small, good sound when used with a DAT, but quite fragile...
Soundman OKM-IIr (can't find a web link now...)
same as above, don't know about the fragility though
Sony ECM907
quite fair sound on both DAT & MD, but big & grey (not the thing you can use on a stealth situation, just in case...)

Oh well with all the smoke you're not likely to get caught once you're in anyway.AlBéRiCk wrote: Sony ECM907

mini disc:
Use a mini disc recorder with manual level control to reduce the overdubs. The Aiwa am f-80 is a good choice. Sony got some pretty good mini disc recorder either. Adjust the peaks manually and do not use the “automatic level control function. Testing the equipment by recording some other band before the Sisters tour may be useful to get some experience. It is also a good idea to check how long the battery power lasts.
mic:
Use a cardioid microphone (no binaural / no omnidirectional microphone) which gets energy from a separate battery.
