Crash & Burn

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

It might be something along these lines:

swing on the wires
shiver to shine
tie on the chrome and plastic
hum of the power lines
sum of a love
trip the light fantastic

do I drive
or am I driven
can I break what I've been given
take a walk
turn
talk or crash and burn

everybody die...
my oh my
? mumbles
you'll find
? mumbles
? mumbles
? mumbles

do I drive
or am I driven
can I break what I've been given
take a walk
turn
talk or crash and burn

hum of the power lines
sum of a love

do I drive
or am I driven
can I break what I've been given
take a walk
talk or crash and burn

or crash and burn

In the "mumbles" section, I also caught the words "soldier in the army of the reich". The rest is just not possible to hear.

Is there any particular reason for why Eldritch hasn't published the lyrics for this song?

My current research on the lyrics for this song is as follows (I'd be happy if someone can fill in the blanks):

slip on the wire ??
shimmer to shine
slide on the chrome and plastic
the hum of the power lines
sum of a love
trip the light fantastic

do I drive
or am I driven
can I break
what I've been given
take a walk
turn, talk or crash and burn

(mumble) ??
nazi soldier in the army of the reich
(mumble) ??

do I drive
or am I driven
can I break what I've been given
take a walk
turn, talk or crash and burn

the hum of the power lines
sum of a love

we slip on the wire ??
we shimmer to shine
we slide on the chrome and plastic

do I drive
or am I driven
can I break
what I've been given
take a walk
turn, talk or crash and burn
or crash and burn
We are coming down but we will never, never land

I always thought the "take a walk" lyric was "take cover". Take a walk fits in better though.

I think the first two lines of the second verse are:

Everybody get a ?????
I've got mine

I think. Why won't he put us out of our misery and publish the lyrics?

Maybe because what we find as mumble IS in fact mumble :)

Maybe he's intending to change them. Perhaps the songs will still mature betwixt stage and vinyl. We can hope...

instead of 'sum of a love' i always hear 'someone to love' but i wouldn't count on it being either one. some of the lines you people have deciphered look good (at least the '..chrome or plastic'), some are just plain bad poetry Eldritch would never write :) also i don't think it's 'nazi soldier' because the word nazi sounds too short for it...it could be 'marching soldier...'

It is not Nazi soldier but rather "a tin soldier in the army of the blind."

I heard that, or maybe "Nobody mumble mumble, I got mine" I'm pretty sure that verse changes a little bit on all 3 of the recordings I've got (Mera Luna 12/8/00, Leeds 17/2/01 and The Forum 6/9/00).

At the end of the verse after the soldier bit, I hear (sometimes) either "he don't care" or "so he don't mind" - on different recordings mind you.

Importantly I also noticed that Eldy throws in "and she said" before some choruses. Listen out for it - it'll probably be important for figuring out the song.

Swing on the wire
Shiver to shine
Tie on the chrome and plastic

Hum of the power lines
Sum of the love
Trip the light fantastic

Singing
Do i drive or am i driven?
can i break, what i been given
take a walk
turn talk, or crash and burn

Everybody in the light
down down
nuclear blast
Married to a soldier, in the army of the reich
Lean on back so, lean on back

She sais

Do i drive or am i driven?
can i break, what i been given
take a walk
turn talk, or crash and burn

Hum of the powerlines
Sum of the love

Shiver to shine
slip on the tin and plastic

Do i drive or am i driven?
can i break, what i been given
take a walk
turn talk, or crash and burn

Far, and no cigar. Not even close to making any sort of sense. No marriages, no swingings on the wire, no sum of love. And it's not "shiver to shine" it's "shimmer to shine". The basic mistake you're doing is just taking the vowels and not paying attention to the rhythm of consonants.

Apologies if i sound like a self-imposed authority. But then again, i am.

After listening to the London 190403 version, i concur. It is indeed
"she's married to a soldier in the army of reich" (the "she's" in the beginning changes the rhythm right)...but where Gary suggested "lean on back" at least the last line is "she don't mind...she says..."

But on that mumbling verse, the first line is something like "everybody got ???" and the second "i got my ???" and what i can hear there would be "sheets" but of course it's not that, i've just no idea what it would be...you people with english as mother's tongue will probably come up with good ideas for what word it could be :)

i must say, this is more difficult than transcribing Summoning's "Dol Guldur" lyrics...'twas easy compared to this!

This sounds like we're in the right direction.

And am I imagining it, or did we not decide at some point that "break" would actually be "brake" in a Von meaning twist.

I'm sure I saw it written like that somewhere...

It is indeed very catchy. I think it should be entered into the Eurovision song contest.

A bit like Marian - 'A Song for Europe', as our stumpy leader used to say. Only it makes you jump up and down a lot, whereas Marian makes you jump down, and not up again.

So please someone find out the lyrics. I haven't even got a decent recording - I've got it from Bristol 2003, but the recording levels are very low, and I haven't worked out how to pump them up for a compilation I'm, well, compiling on windows media player. I'm a flipping peasant, me.
