define a reasonable right to liberty... OK, I believe it is reasonable to expect not to be detained indefinitely because someone else disapproves of my behaviour. After all, if _you_ keep me locked up, that's kidnapping and/or wrongful imprisonment and it's a crime. If execution is state-sponsored ...

If the death penalty is inhumane, why is permanent incarceration any better? Surely that also infringes a reasonable human right to liberty? If you forfeit that right through your actions as a free man, can't you also forfeit your right to life? Ultimately, is any criminal justice system fundamental...

Ah well. I'm sure he'll be disappointed to hear that. I understand he'd already booked a flight to Glasgow on the off-chance of bumping into you somewhere. I-Spy in German would be utterly futile; I have a problem with nouns in that language. I'm just going to have to rely on Nina to keep me occupie...

It looked more like leather, but by the miracles of reflected light .....

There was a leathery corset involved later on as well. Curious. I rather preferred Syrah. She's lovely.

gamebookers quoted Sunderland at 100/1 in an e-mail on my desk this morning. It didn't specify whether that would be as a player or a manager, though.

We won. With a last-minute goal from a corner. I didn't stay much longer.

Found a nice pub in Rochdale as well. It was a bizarre evening.

I'm really going to hate this place, aren't I? Just give it a chance and make the best of it! It might even snow overthere...go "langlaufen" and sing a song like snowdriver! Have a good time! 8) Oh, don't get me wrong. This is all about the management of expectations. Most of my best trips have bee...

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/andymackem2000/detail?.dir=929d&.dnm=f524.jpg&.src=ph Might give some idea. Possibly more than the official website, which is alarmingly bad. But then again, so's this pic. The Brett connection was more to do with his mannerisms. The Marc Almond was definitely more to d...

See, I told you it was the Coventry of Austria. I'm really going to hate this place, aren't I? Still unsure of the usefulness of all this. Or my pics. Possibly I hadn't mentioned the impact of alcohol on my (negligible) photographic skills. www.f-a-q.ch will probably help. It claims to be the band's...

Brett Anderson Ahhh... in my preteen years, Suede videos provided quite an "awakening"... :innocent:    Still definitely would ;D . Now, where's this lookey-likey? Do many Sisters' fans like The m*****n? I know I don't. That list has it wrong. Who's Miranda Sex Garden? Most of the TSOM fans I've met are at least Mission-tolerant, if not actively enthusiastic. Most of the TSOM fans on here seem to be very anti. Go figure. Miranda Sex Garden are hard work in an...

I had a bad feeling about this trip from the start. Graz appears to be the Coventry of Austria. Teutonic two-tone bands? :innocent: "This town... is 'comin' like a geist-town"... You haven't heard the fenland version: "Diss town, be a-cummin loike a ghostie town" (assuming the fens mysteriously rel...

Graz, Austria

Buoyed by a surprisingly successful trip to Berlin (I even managed a comprehensible sentence in German, and met a Russian-speaking alsatian in a dive bar in the darkest East) I'm heading back to Germanic parts next week. Unfortunately my knowledge of Austria is based around Alps, Mozart, the Alps, V...

In happier news the burned out car at the corner of my road has been taken away somewhere. Possibly Paris, Bremen or Berlin for all I know. It would appear Essex is going to be the future after all. That may not be the happier news we've been waiting for. So Berlin has until Friday to perfect this r...

Many years ago I was working at a press agency in Bishop Auckland, where one of my tasks was compiling the local junior swimming results. It was a glamourous job, as I'm sure you can imagine. Are they still on the island? Have there been more slightly strange but not very interesting events?

Are the women still fractionally less attractive than they initially appear?

As an aside, my father was teaching at Sunderland Poly (as was) when the Wearside Jack tapes were released. One of his students sounded very similar to the man on the tape (though arguably a broad Wearside accent would be the only detail anyone would pick up, ignoring the subtlties of different voic...

Went to see the play on Saturday. Not bad, but not essential. One very good, balls out rocking affair from Mr Cave (recorded, not live, obviously) in the style of Loverman. And a neat visual gag in having the Drum Major's henchmen appearing as a dozen or so bewigged Cave-a-likes strutting around. Th...

At home, I always sleep naked. Likewise in hotels, unless sharing with someone other than my nearest and dearest.

Hostels, trains and other public sleeping venues I tend to stick to a t-shirt and boxers.

I'm sure that information will interest someone. Just not sure who. Or why.
