@Being645 I’ll give it a try, I don’t want to end up like AE, bless his heart. Luckily I have Creek Indian lineage so I started out with lots of hair, still, dang it all

It works on my hair, which started to get very dry some years ago. All fine now. Thanks to some vegan Aloe Vera shampoo from the wholefood shop. Good luck to you... :) ...

My two are back up to full speed now thank you. :)
Was quite traumatic stuffing tablets down them each day for a week but I escaped unscathed & they are still talking to me.

@Being645 Thanks, yeah I tried going without Adderall a few days and it was not a pleasant experience. I was all kinds of discombobulated lol. I may have even growled at some people that invaded my personal space in the store

I will be posting here frequently lol, because I am apparently cursed with bad luck. I just heard a commotion outside and went out to see about it. A huge raccoon had climbed up on my patio table and had my full pack of Marlboros and took off across the yard with them. I mean, really? I know I need to quit (again) but I wasn’t planning on doing it tonight. And I can’t find my BB gun, probably stolen right off my porch

Oh man, cheeky blighter. Take it as a sign. The universe is telling you something. I do love raccoons though, they are very cool creatures. From a distance. Big as f**k too. Had one in my back yard once, stood up on its hind legs and scared the bejeezus out of me. Thought it was a bear until I saw it’s Lone Ranger mask

The ‘universe’ is telling me to quit leaving things on my front porch. This one was just about the size of a baby bear, growled at me, looked snarky & more like he’d have preferred a cigar

That feeling when you issue

Code: Select all

service httpd restart
and the webserver doesn't come back up. Turns out somebody updated PHP/apache without actually telling the devs

whoops.

i always get that sort of nervousness when i have to do a "sudo reboot now"

you have that will it/won't it moment while you wait for the server to come back up :urff:

At least I didn't do it to a public-facing server.

This time.

The favourite one I did was typo a MySQL command once:

Code: Select all

DELETE FROM table WHERE id-1
Note id-1 rather than id=1...

A year ago I went through 70k+ photographs, adding tags and geoloc data.

Today I discovered that none of the photos have metadata attached.

Turns out I neglected to use the "rewrite metadata for selected files" function.

CBPOB my own stupidity.

Yeah. You know the guy, never throws anything away, his shed is full of carefully-labeled jars full of screws that came out of something else, he's thinking, "well, you never know when that will come in useful", the guy who saves everything, he has a drawer full of odds and ends (like leather from old handbags that your mum was going to throw out because they'd reached the end of their working life), an attic full of cardboard packing boxes that they used when they moved house 50 years ago but never got tossed because "these are quality boxes, why would we spend money on new ones"?

I've inherited a number of admirable traits from my dad, and a few less great ones, like never throwing anything away. Since I live in under 50 square metres of space (no attic, no basement, no shed) I can't hoard, but when it comes to digital...well, drives are cheap and 2TB takes up no more space than 1TB, right?

Fortunately my hoarding habit comes with the VisualMemory add-on and the OCDOrganisation plug-in, so it wasn't as difficult as I feared to repair the damage. Can recommend DigiKam for your photos - it's a bit non-intuitive, but it's free, powerful, and has introduced me to sidecars (how did I not know about these things before? they're piggin' brilliant!).

DigiKam will be checked v
Does it work good for browsing the photos in an archived folder with thousands of images?

If you're just after a browsing tool then FastStone is excellent (also free). DigiKam lets you tag, caption, title, and geotag, so if you want to organise the stuff in that archived folder then you can. What's cool about DigiKam is that it has this "sidecar" creation feature - essentially an xmp file that shares the name of the image, but contains all your custom tagging information (beyond EXIF, camera-captured data). So if you want to categorise your pictures by (let's says) Country, City, Feature, and Person, set the coordinates of where the picture was taken, and give it a title and a caption, you can. That file can be read by other applications (since it's xmp), so if you're using something like DarkTable (free) or LightRoom (sell your first-born child) to edit it's really simple to say "show me all the pictures I've taken of this thing".

You can also use a file-naming convention to see from the file name what the thing is, but this doesn't let you easily capture all the additional data.

one of the very few (literally countable on one hand actually) things that annoy me about linux is that it doesnt have an image browser as good as FastStone.

My whole life I have watched the world get smaller, watched as barriers came down, watched as people who had previously viewed their neighbours as alien and threatening slowly changed their perception. It gave me hope that we might find a better way of addressing our differences than picking up a gun. Lots of people worked very very hard to make this work - deep-rooted enmities were buried, hundreds of years of mistrust were set aside, old hurts were forgiven - and it was working. Slowly, yes, but one step at a time.

Today I watched as the prime minister of the country whose passport I hold (it's not "my" country) effectively said "Fuck that noise, if I can't get what I want then I'm taking my bat and ball and going home." What a colossal tool. In 20 days the UK leaves an institution which for the past 50 years has been the bedrock of regional prosperity and peace, yelling "we're taking back control!" as the lights go out one by one, as the tumbleweeds blow through manufacturing facilities which only set up shop because it was a gateway to Europe, as the increasing price of goods hits the people least able to bear it. This is too depressing for words.

Any EU HLers willing to marry me so that I can belong to a country that isn't run by a cockwomble and his cabal of cronies, to live somewhere other than the "chumocracy" that Boris Johnson and his ilk have reduced the UK to? Seriously, I won't be picky - homely daughters, youngest sons who won't inherit, I'll accept anything on offer.

f**king hell, well bloody said. What a state of affairs. On the one hand I want it all to go badly tits up so all the idiots that cried for this suffer. But then, all my family back home will suffer too and my homeland will be a wreck. I used to joke when people asked me why I didn’t become a citizen here, I joked because I didn’t want the lobotomy. Now it seems I might need one to get back home
