GTA IV - Dominion

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Not sure if this has ever really been discussed here.

Curious to know how much Eldritch received in terms of licensing to use this song in Grand Theft Auto IV.

Seeing as it is the best selling PS3 game of all time, always wanted to know if he received just a basic one time cheque or if he is still receiving residual payments.

You´re really curious.... Does he owe you something?;-)

BTW, I didn´t know about it, I´m really not that convinced either this is a good thing to spread the music like that or not....

the news that the bohemian rhapsody scene from waynes world was originally intended to be to This Corrosion but von vetoed it certainly proves he's choosy about what tracks of his are used for what. quite a canny move by him then i suppose.
Well I was handsome and I was strong
And I knew the words to every song.
"Did my singing please you?"
"No! The words you sang were wrong!"

Soft spot for Rockstar North, maybe? They did Lemmings, I'm pretty sure he listed that as one of his favourite games.

Ah, GTA III is on the list too (the one on the website), so that'll be it.

Of course I think this move he deliberately considered. I´m still skeptical to music as pcgame background....

Me too. But at the time, everybody had to do it. Just like before, when music videos became a condition for chart success.

But AE one of the everybodys? Videos could be at last deep or funny. Could. It´s another market anyway. But PCgames? Maybe. I tend to believe rather not. But I think I know what you mean. It is what it is.

Then as now, there's everbodys and there's nobodys ... and no Gods would ever change it, for their own sake.
Even Bowie issued some PC game called "Omikron" with the music of "Outside". Funny days.

Of course it depends on one´s purpose and circumstances, I think Bowie wanted to be a kind of pioneer. That´s not to blame, you never know anyway.... It´s the old question of mankind, belong art and commercial massspreading together? I remember Morrison and the Buickcar....

I already feel a bit guilty like a moral fanboy screaming sellout. But the spirit is important....

It is what it is....

Game music depends on the game, and, erm, the music. When done proper it's glorious, two cases in point that always jump immediately to mind being the soundtracks to the original Doom (riffs beyond reproach), and Silent Hill 2. Indeed I'd be very surprised if Akira Yamaoka didn't know his way round the Sisters back-catalogue. SH2 is instrumental, he said he was looking for a PJ Harvey / Shirley Manson type vibe for the third game which was to feature girly hollering, ended up with a Stevie Nicks-alike, no bad thing at all.

I'd argue that the soundtracks to all GTA games are superb and greatly enhance the games.

Von has a right to make a living, and that includes licensing his work in ways that we, the Bastard Public, may or may not approve of.

The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside.

To be honest, if the rights to the music are owned by WEA or whichever multi national corporation Andrew last took money off , he may have had no control over the songs usage.

Damn right, to both of you.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

Looks as if it might be removed from the game soon

The games industry is triple the size of Hollywood, so it makes sense for labels and artists to look for opportunities where they can.

Terribly sorry to bump an old post, I'm new here and just looking for opportunities to contribute.

I read recently that this game is being "patched" to remove songs for which the music licenses have expired. Whether that includes Dominion I am not sure but it would indicate to me that at least some songs were licensed for fixed periods; that likely means that AE got a single royalty check when the game developer bought the rights to use it; he probably doesn't get a cheque every time a copy of the game sells.

I doubt that in 1980's WEA predicted that viedogames/PCgames was option for licesing, so it might not be the case. Of coure, unless it wasn't any annexes later.

I'm the last who can shout: sell-out for making money out if that kind of use of his work(s). At least he's not using his face to sell me some gumbo.
It's was one of the best use of his music. Some like GTA series, other don't, but i loved it for wit and sacrasm over American popculture and some aspects of American way.

Didn't the rights all get signed away prior to the Rhino re-releases? This rings a bell in the fog of memory
