Is Andrew Eldritch a good role model?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

@Pista you could’ve been his body double. I think you all should post your picture from that time, would be interesting to see. Also, rock musicians aren’t supposed to be role models, that’s not their responsibility

I’ve never heard of Space 1999, not sure what that’s about. So, no one else wants to post their 1980’s pictures? 👨🏻‍🎤 I know I don’t lol, but we didn’t have TSOM. A couple of Axl’s and Michael Jackson’s, but mostly Def Leppard fans. (Parents, it is up to parents to be role models. And maybe once upon a time teachers, but not some of these we have now who try to indoctrinate)

80s sci fi kids space show on Saturday mornings by Gerry Anderson (I think) Sure it was an American import

Oh I have pictures. Looking like a Sigue Sigue Sputnik reject during that era. Pretty sad. I’ll see if I can scan some in. Should be good for a laugh

I don’t think Sigue Sigue woulda rejected anyone judging by the way they looked in the posters I had/ still have. I guess I was probably watching the Brady bunch as a kid or The Osmonds :| (my mom got into the Mormon church for several years). Aight, I do wonder what the heck kind of clogs you could possibly have been referring to

i would imagine it's the type of clogs that New Model Army used to wear:

which were not dissimilar to these:

Most cloggies (is that a word?) in the north of England bought their NMA-style clogs from Walkleys Clogs Mill near Hebden Bridge, in Yorkshire. It was only a few miles from where NMA came from and it's where (I gather) they got theirs.

They had what amounted to a lifetime guarantee as you could get them re-soled for pennies if they ever wore down. Which is probably another reason why NMA wore them, in addition to the aesthetic.

http://www.clogs.co.uk/boot%20clogs.htm

I remember hearing Walkleys went bust a quite a few years a back though, and the old factory mill burned down last year.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-49195966

Which is all quite sad really.

While they were open you could take a walking tour of the factory mill itself - it was quite a touristy thing to do, and quite popular with goff types because of the NMA connection.

I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that during the early 90s it was NMA fans who kept the company in business  but that may not have been the full truth.

I always had more of a Danny Ash mashed up with Eldritch style myself (maybe mashed up with a hint of P**l King from Ros***a Stone), but I did occasionally sport a Jonny Slut Specimen/Degville Sputnik look :D

I think Justin would recoil from.any 'goth' affiliation . Memory has him describing NMA to my youngest as a 'blues band'.

NMA confederate Jools was certainly a bit more gothic back in the day.

Admirable people though, however you colour them.

Exactly. That warms the cockles of my heart. Best shoes I ever wore, so comfortable, but an absolute bitch to get any traction on icy streets. Think I bought mine somewhere in Camden

i guess the uppers are a bit like docs, but more typically they're like old army boots (often they're made using the uppers from old german army boots)

the soles are pure wood though, and nailed onto the upper

none of that "airware" comfort sole nonsense there

Yeah infinitely less comfortable than creepers. Ha.
Skirting back toward the role model side of things, Chris Catalyst said last night that Eldritch always wanted to be a gay icon. I'd loved for him to have expanded on the subject a bit more, but alas, no. If you're part of an industrial groove machine gay icon is infinitely cooler than good role model.

Well they did serve a purpose in that front. They looked and sounded quite intimidating. They had an air of ‘dont Farque with me’ about them

Didn't think so. Chris just mentioned it on his lock down gig the other night. He didn't expand any further, really. Maybe he just thought it would be cool.
