Crash & Burn

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

The BAOR and RAFG were both stationed predominately in this region:

"The State. Image: Edgard Hörz
Author: Philipp Schiwek
Keyword: nrw

Sixty years ago the fusion between parts of the Rhineland and Westphalia happened under the codeword Operation Marriage when, on 23 August 1946, the British Military Administration established the state. And considering the diversity of rural Westphalia and industrial Northern Rhineland, the fusion was rather more a marriage of convenience than of love."

Interesting that "Operation Marriage" by the British Army brought this about.

This could shed a new light of the actual context of "Married to a soldier in the Army of the Rhine"

Many Brits still live there, and I would also presume that if you were the son of a RAFG Officer stationed in NRW, Germany you might just have a mix of an English accent and German one and speak both languages fluently.

Interesting how I found this though. First after speaking with a lead singer from a supposedly unrelated band and asking about some song lyrics I discovered the BAOR.

While looking into the only known live recording of the same seemingly unrelated band, a recording supposedly made in Neuss in 1992, look what I ended up finding?

I've always believed the lyrics to the newer stuff to be deceptively simple.

I suppose it's possible Von lived in Germany as a child although if that were the case,I'd also expect him to have spoken German fluently. And he didn't.In the early 80s,his German was described as "fair" by one german interviewer and only "passable" by another. This is what you'd expect from someone who learned a second language in school as opposed to having actually lived in a foreign country.

Uh, not necessarily. Being an RAF brat he admitedly moved around quite a bit in his childhood. There was that interview where he mentioned early memories in Singapore. So his not speaking Chinese fluently doesn't mean he never lived there either. My guess is that he lived in Germany for a longer stretch though. Maybe he was born there? All we know for certain about his past is all he has told us. Yet I find deciphering some of his lyrics, if not all of them, difficult to say the least without some autobiographical context. I'm past caring about my own subjective interpretations. Nietzsche wrote "Ecce Homo" for some good reasons and maybe Von will too one day. I'm sure it would be a fascinating read. :)

I think all we will ever have for Vons "Ecce Homo" is his work-the songs and bits of writing in UTR,etc. The most recent interview has him saying he won't write his memoirs (as well as giving several reasons why.sigh.)
What annoys me is that I know, eventually, someone will write his biography or "The Definitive Guide to the Lyrics" and they will get it all WRONG just like that horrid Enid Starkie did with Rimbaud.

Does he state that in that Classic Rock magazine interview? No memoirs? What were his reasons for saying he would not?
That's such a shame really. I'd bet he's had a rather interesting life.

For the record, I never stated which "seemingly unrelated band" and for good reason.

The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside.
