Show Me

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

Show me on the doll, Oslo 28.09 video taken by Ingo

I believe someone can bring up the whole song after that and the previous vids :D :notworthy:
Going by Ingo's yet again fabulous video this is what i get - pretty similar to before, but i think the 'love like love' line is followed by 'but simulated.'

Nice work Charlie.

One thing I'm hearing though (& I could be wrong, I usually am)

Show me pop music sounds more like "Show me amusing"

I'm not hearing the "p" sounds at all
Cheers.

Hmmmmn, i know what you mean, that line sounds slightly different to previous times he has sung it, was sure it was pop music before, could be just how he's singing it or he could have changed it or could have been amusing all along?! :?

Like I said, I could be wrong. But if I follow the lines:
Show me amusing Barbie rock & roll

That sort of makes sense to me.
I'll need to listen to other versions to see if I am talking bollox though
Cheers.

Which could sort of make sense if the theme, with the dolls, TV and the rest, has to do with some kind of disconnect from the real thing.
Agree, have heard "but simulated" from the beginning and it fits well.

This song felt good from the beginning and is just getting better :notworthy:

So you did! I missed that completely.

Well we've both heard it independently now, so i reckon we're getting very close - that is until Andrew changes it all again.

Hope we get finalised lyrics at the end of the tour! Really love this song! :D

Didn't write it here, just on Poison Door :)

Anyway, about "pop music" vs "amusing":

I do not hear "amusing" in Ingo's latest recording from Oslo:

https://youtu.be/ew3NlPatg50?t=58

I think I hear consonants both at the beginning and at the end, even if I can't swear they are [p] and [k], but I think so.
What IS more clear is that IF he sings amusing here, he pronounces it "AH-musing". I'm no native speaker of English but doesn't that sound strange?

At first, I did think he'd said "dole" until about halfway through the song.

I do think it's meant to *sound* like "dole" as well, as a second meaning, but would be disappointed if it would be dole *instead* of doll - that would make the lyrics weaker and less Eldritch. Being on the dole is too "everyday" and has nothing sinister about it, not even if you dreamt of fame and fortune and fell to being "on the dole" instead.
"Show me on the doll" is far darker, even if it "only" is a symbol for inability to communicate.

It's the song that keeps on giving. It actually started out as my least favourite new one and it's edging its way to first place the more I really listen to it. Plus it's catchy af.

Given the ever more life-squeezing austerity programme that is in operation in the UK for years on end by now,
I think using the term "dole" is way below any sort of "classic" Eldritch double entendre, unless he's really become somewhat senile over the years.

my feeling is he wants 2 different versions, one at the first encounter and other for the next

If it is "Barbie Rock'n'Roll", here are the lyric for Dolly Parton's "Backwoods Barbie"

They may be relevant.

I grew up poor and ragged, just a simple country girl.
I wanted to be pretty more than anything in the world,
Like Barbie or the models in the Fredricks' catalog.
From rags to wishes in my dreams I could have it all.
I'm just a backwoods Barbie, too much makeup, too much hair.
Don't be fooled by thinkin' that the goods are not all there.
Don't let these false eyelashes lead you to believe that
I'm as shallow as I look 'cause I run true and deep.

I've always been misunderstood because of how I look.
Don't judge me by the cover 'cause I'm a real good book.
So read into it what you will, but see me as I am.
The way I look is just a country girl's idea of glam.

I'm just a backwoods Barbie in a push-up bra and heels.
I might look artificial, but where it counts I'm real.
And I'm all dolled up and hopin' for a chance to prove my worth,
And even backwoods Barbie's get their feelings hurt.

I'm just a backwoods Barbie, too much makeup, too much hair.
Don't be fooled by thinkin' that the goods are not all there.
Yes, I can see where I could be misjudged upon first glance,
But even backwoods Barbie's deserve a second chance.
I'm just a backwoods Barbie just asking for a chance,
Just a backwoods Barbie.

If you lay it out like this
Show me amusing Barbie rock n roll
It just looks right on paper & when spoken/ sung (to me)

I'm half wondering if it's a reference to the absurdity of K-Pop
Cheers.

We've had quite a few varieties by now - door, doll, barmy, Barbie ... popmusic, amusing ... love like ... simulated ... I think these basically two settings are not far away from each other at all.

* And yes, Scardwel ... I can see it now, that :von: might even built a version an "dole" ... along these directions ... ;D ...
in particular "simulated" (like job training) and "dole" ... make a direct connection to "Arms" in my temper... for which, eh btw, sorry ... :innocent: ...
