I think she means "what numbers can you produce that way...." to which the answer would be any number since 5 and 7 are relatively prime...but I'm not sure though...(but then you'd have to have the possibility to substract too, not only adding....)

Oh, right so like
5+5+5-7-7=1
7-5=2
5+5-7=3
7+7-5-5=4
5=5
5+5+5+5-7-7=6
7=7
...
etc.
5+5+5-7-7=1
7-5=2
5+5-7=3
7+7-5-5=4
5=5
5+5+5+5-7-7=6
7=7
...
etc.

the thing being of course, you don't have to do them all by hand, because if you can make 1=5+5+5-7-7
it means you can make any number n by saying
n=n*1=n*5+n*5+n*5-n*7-n*7
it means you can make any number n by saying
n=n*1=n*5+n*5+n*5-n*7-n*7

Well, yes, but that's cheating
It's more fun to try to find the shortest for any given number.
Jeez, I am a geek, finding maths fun!

well, in that case you can make imaginary numbers:
sq. root(5+5+5+5-7-7-7) = i
sq. root(5+5+5+5-7-7-7) = i

Isn't multiplication cheating?
@lazcorp: you can't make irrational numbers though.

(7-5) to the power of the sq. root of (7-5) is a transcendental number (it's called the Gelfond-Schneider Constant)
(5+5+5+7) / 7markfiend wrote:Make pi.

@ lazcorp: Bugger. You win
But 22/7 for pi is pathetic only the third decimal.
(((7x7)+5+5+5+7)x5)/(((7+7)x7)+5+5+5) is accurate to 6 decimals!

No.. i'm only allowed to add. the q is to explore numbers that can be made this way, and ones that can't.markfiend wrote:Probably not.lazarus corporation wrote:do you think that answered emilystrange's question?
and then extend by using different pairs of numbers.
Don't tell me the answer, i have to do it myself even if its my worst nightmare. just tell me if i'm on the right track with sequencing!
