Not goth by today's terrible standards I guess, and always more rock, but they definitely had goth tendancies. And there is that pic of Ian wearing a Nephs tee (sleeves removed, of course).lucretia wrote:hallucienate wrote:Joy Div - Still

Hey, each to his own... I didn't hate it - in fact I really like their sound - just didn't find the tunes that strong.Burn wrote:boudicca wrote:Got 'Tocsin' by Xmal Deutschland the other day... disappointing.

I figured they'd be great since they're Deutsch! But anyway, no offence intended.

I had a rethunk about this. What actually IS Goth? If it means it's music that makes you want to dress in black, paint your face like Morticia and dance out on the floor under the sparkly lights, chasing butterflies in the air ... then, for me, that would have been Alien Sex Fiend, Miranda Sex Garden, Siouxie, Bauhaus, Rosetta Stone, The Wake etc. etc. ...
But if it's "Goth" as in a state of mind type of thing - loving all things dark and strange and weird and being like that yourself, then NIN, Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Dead Can Dance would come closer to that in my head. The closest Sisters ever came to G in my book was with my signature toon, cos that REALLY makes me want to wave my hands in the air and go all loopy all over the place but everything else Andrew has ever done just makes me want to Boogy, get drunk, fall all over the place and Boogy some more!
Type O Negative have been classified as Goth because Pete gets all ridiculously poetic but that's a shame really, cos their music is far bigger than that. The more I listen to them, the more I think they should have a whole genre named just after them. But that's my humble opinion and I'm going to bed now, cos the rain she is coming ...

Type O gets classified as go..got..sorry, can't bring myself to even speak it. Well, they get classified as "that" because of the song 'Black #1', which Peter S has said on numerous occasions is a parody, and not meant to be taken seriously.
Of course, people read that to mean "Please take this seriously and try to replicate every characteristic of the woman in the song". It's a shame, really, because Type O is a decent black/dark metal band.
I would have done something, but I was overwhelmed by a lack of concern.

Oops ...!
I've never thought of TON as metal either - there's too much piano, orchestral stuff, synths, swoony bits.
I made that reference to them being GGGGah ..(!) because everytime I've ever heard them in a club environment, the dj has lumped them in the same string as all other classically G bands and just about every review I have of them, sadly they are stuck in that genre by the hacks who write about them.
I consider them out there on their own.

"g****c" is also very hard to define because all of the bands that seemingly fall under such an ambiguous and broad catagory deny all relations. In fact, most bands that deny it with such fervency are the ones that are THE definitive bands of the genre according to most (the sisters, the cure, etc). Its become an ugly word that implies being pretentious, constantly depressed, elitist, etc... like emo (oh my god, i'm relating it to emo, this isn't good) it's never really been a definitive movement, but instead one borrowing aspects from quite a few other genres to create an often delicious hybrid (delicious referring to g***, not emo).
And yes, i would go so far as to call it delicious.
Anyway, my list, whether g***y enough or not!
The Cure - Disintegration
Sisters of Mercy - Floodland/First and Last and Always (sorry andy )
Switchblade Symphony - Serpentine Gallery
Skinny Puppy - Bites

of course it's an ugly word...being put in any category is reductory...moreso when you're put in a conservatist, cliché of itself type of niche....puzzle piece wrote:"g****c" is also very hard to define because all of the bands that seemingly fall under such an ambiguous and broad catagory deny all relations.
