Indeed. Give me a voice with character over one with awesome technical proficiency every time. God knows :von: doesn't have an 8-octave range... but Mariah Carey does. So you see, it's not always a good thing.

I think Von's technically better than people often give him credit for, though.

Bjork (not so much her delivery but her creative soul)

PJ Harvey (for complete raw emotion all the time)
Kate Bush (cos I just happen to love her music to bits, even now)
Tori Amos (when she's not being ridiculous)
Ella Fitzgerald - true class

Female vocalists and no mention of Tarja Turunen? Hang your heads in shame. Not only a technically (fairly) accomplished singer, she's also a top babe and a great show-woman (is that a word? it is now!).

Where's Sarah Cracknell (St Etienne)? Very sexy voice. Ditto Sarah Nixey (Black Box Recorder). Though that could be my on-going crush for my primary school teacher influencing me in a hugely unhealthy fashion :oops:

Kristen Hersh for angst and raw emotion. The girl from Qntal for ethereal oddity in a Lisa Gerrard style.

Good call on Dietrich - can we have Judi Dench as Sally Bowles as well? Or does she count as an actress rather than a singer? If you've not heard it, just trust me. :D

On a personal note again, Lauren Laverne. Just for the accent :wink:

Blokes. Hmmm.

Not many really spring to mind. For power and pyrotechnics you've got to have Freddie Mercury but most of his material was ropey (even as a closet Queen fan I can't get excited).

Not having Eldritch - he's a decent frontman (when he can be arsed) but a lousy vocalist. I'd say Hussey was better myself.

Carl McCoy and Pete Murphy I'd keep. I quite like Neil Tennent as well, though I'd struggle to defend that against any kind of rational analysis.

Chappie from Tindersticks is good. Nick Cave is another frontman rather than singer. I think that's a key distinction here.

Not me. Under any circumstances, and especially not after beers.

And after all that forgot Morrissey. Though he's a tit, to be fair.

No offence like, but I have never been able to understand how Lauren Laverne "got on". Kenickie (spelling?) were atrocious. A joke-band that weren't funny.

Awww ... Kenickie were OK. Not the greatest but good fun live. And songs like Classy and PVC remind me of nights out back home.

At least I don't have my cheesy, thumbs-up photo taken with members of Status Quo :P :D

Though I did once see them live, by accident :oops:
