Do you have real-life memories, people, or places you attach to specific Sisters songs? Kicking off, I know a girl - an ex - to whom the song Anaconda seems to refer. Anyone got any other examples?

there's an old urban myth surrounding "the banshee" nighclub in manchester, back in the day. well, about 1990ish anyway.

the story goes that there was an eldritch clone called mark that used to go there with his girlfriend of the time, who was a patricia clone and who's name i shall not mention (for no other reason that it does not matter to the story).

the legend goes that one evening they had a row and mark finished with in the club, in a rather public fashion. later that evening they played "some kind of stranger" (last song of the night, i would assume) and during said song the patricia clone slit her wrists in a (attention seeking) fit of grief.

I shouldn't really be surprised, I've unfortunately been in a couple of ambulances with people who have done similar things.
...most disturbing! At least she had a good soundtrack, though! Was the DJ perhaps being...ironic?!

and i remember when i was about 16 or 17, being round at my grandads house one afternoon when he was out (he used to let me go round and listen to music on his seperates system)

i'd heard about the sisters from a mate (i was pretty much an indie kid at the time - bunnymen, pixies, etc etc) and i'd seen a few photos of the first anmd second line-ups and thought i'd like to hear them.

so i borrowed FALAA out of the local record library and went round to my grandad's house to play it.

i vividly remember putting the needle on, and hearing the opening piano chords to "black planet" for the first time and then the song itself kicked in and the bass drum nearly blew the speakers...

and then He started singing.

i remember thinking "jesus christ! who the hell is this guy? and what the f**k is up with his voice? i LOVE IT!!!"

i listened to the whole of side 1 and was impressed, and then half way through side 2 "nine while nine" came on and i literally fell over on the spot. it was a stunning song that hit me like a brick. i could barely breathe and from that moment on i was a sisters fan.

As far as I know, that's not what really happened. For a start, I didn't finish with her in there. For a second thing, it was hard enough getting the DJ to play the Sisters at all, never mind SKOS. For a third thing, she didn't seem the wrist-slitting type. Although as I wasn't at the Banshee whenever she visited next after our split, I cannot vouch for the total inaccuracy of the story

i went out with a girl from urmston (near manchester) for a short while and i seem to recal the last time i went round to her house we'd had a bit of a row. (it wasn't long after that we split up)

after that last visit i was going home, and waiting for a bus from urmston back into manchester. on my personal stereo was FALAA (kel surpreeze) and just as the bus turned the corner and came into view further down the road "a rock and a hard place" came one and i had a wierd moment where every little detail of the intro became very, very clear. the drums, the synthy bassline, the twinkley fret-slidey bit of the guitar that happens after about 4 bars, the phased guitar and the ethereal guitar that come in shortly after that. all of it.

its odd but even now, every time i hear the opening strands of the song i still feel as if i'm back at that bus stop. i get such a strong sense of displacement (is that the word?) and can sense everything from that point - smells, colours, the cold, etc etc

its even more odd because we weren't even that close and had only been going out for a few weeks. i think it was more down to the power of the song and the strangeness of the day itself.

reasons like that are why i love the sisters so much. no other band, apart from the chameleons maybe, give me as many "moments" as the sisters do.

i dont even recall how it started - you know what that place was like

i certainly recall hearing it from a couple of people over the years, but i never saw it myself. i probably stopped paying attention after the dude in the cowboy hat & shades left...

still, it makes you sound kinda cool in a "sad-goth kudos" way dunnit?

*nod* Total agreement, my man. Almiche has so kindly pointed out the song that applies in much the same way to me; my ex had just hooked up with my best mate, and was trying desperately to get me to remain friends with the pair of them, and I snapped, "I can love my fellow man, but I'm damned if I'll love yours...or you!"

It went right over her head, but everytime Von sings those two lines, I think of a girl who looked for love in all the wrong places. Stupid.
