This album title seems very biblical. Okay they were goths (even if they deny it) but I never expected it from Eldritch, assuming it indeed is a religious/biblical reference. Is it?

in the context of relationships it could be seen as someone that was first love, will be your last love ("i'll never love again!") and will be the one you always love (they say your first love always ha a special place in your heart)...

That crucial first love. Sort of happens too young, though, doesn't it? Like in instances where you look back (with added years of wisdom under your belt) and say, "Why didn't I see that coming?", "what did I ever see in so-and-so?", "what a user!", et al.

I took it as a boastful, debut-typical, self-confident proclamation, expressing the estimated impact, the album/the band will surely have on the world.
(something like "We came, we saw, we conquered)
Didn't think, that love could be such an issue in these early days..
First love? Never had one myself, can't relate therefore.

It's biblical in that that it is a bible quote. Andrew said in an interview that he always knew the album was going to be their first and last. Hence the title, which was to be prophetic and smug at the same time, and Wake. He could see things on the horizon. The words to Possession is about that.

I've just looked up "first and last and always" on an online searchable bible, and not found it.The Green Lantern wrote:It's biblical in that that it is a bible quote.

Perhaps along the lines of "I am the Alpha and the Omega". Not a direct quote, though.markfiend wrote:I've just looked up "first and last and always" on an online searchable bible, and not found it.The Green Lantern wrote:It's biblical in that that it is a bible quote.

Yep, the phrase "I am the alpha and the omega," meaning I am the first and the last, appears a few times in Revelations. The closest to first and last and always is probably Revelations 1:8: "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Or thereabouts.
Reminds me of quote's associated with King ArthurCorpPunk wrote:"who is, and who was, and who is to come....."

but by the power of google, i bring you the demo version (king james natch)
Isaiah 44:6 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV)
Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Unfortunatley the title reminds me of this little ditty:

I'm sure I've seen it as an exact quote as well, not just a vague resemblance. Come to think of it I'm pretty sure Richard Chamberlein recites the phrase in Thornbirds. Give me a moment or a couple years and I'll look it up

Certainly. The gig was named Wake in advance. The good Lord Von knoweth things far beyond our ken (that's knowledge, not Barlow, mind, because he's really clever).
