Though I've never really cared for Kylie or her music, I do feel genuinely bad for her - my mom's gone through the nightmare of breast cancer twice; one of her sisters and one of her cousins battled the disease for years, and ultimately lost. I guess I'm kind of waiting around for my turn...
@ zaltys7: I'll keep you in my thoughts, and I hope your prognosis is good. *Hugs*

Are we talking gay men or women.Quiff Boy wrote:a "gay icon" is someone that is an iconic figure to gay people.
Which she is as well, surely. So I repeat my question:Quiff Boy wrote:ergo a "straight icon" would be someone that iconic to straight people.
What's the difference? Is one preferable to the other?
You mean when men were men and gay meant happy?Quiff Boy wrote:what did they teach at school in them days?
And if 'bent' is politically incorrect these days, why isn't 'straight'?
And you know that she's half crazy but that's why you want to be there.

yes. "straight icons" as you call them dont have to be in the judy garland mold
"And if 'bent' is politically incorrect these days, why isn't 'straight'?"
its about ownership. generalising massively, again. gay people are ok with with being called gay. bent has yet to be adopted by the gay community.
straight people tend not to mind being called straight. ist better than being the opposite to gay: miserable
unless you are goffix though

Some more militant gay activists do object to the word "straight" for heterosexuality because by implication they are "bent".

The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.

And I object to it cos it suggests straight-laced, which implies boring.markfiend wrote:Some more militant gay activists do object to the word "straight" for heterosexuality because by implication they are "bent".

IMHO it helps draw attention to this disease and therefore more people may become more aware of it than they were before.Mrs RicheyJames wrote:markfiend wrote:Totally agree with you. Thousands of people a year die from this horrible disease. But no-one cares until it's someone famous? Sick.

I'll join in with sending good vibes and fervent hopes to Paul - good luck.
Don't really care about Kylie, except in the same way as one feels sorry for anyone facing such an illness (but........wouldn't want my pictures splattered all over the papers whilst undergoing treatment).

Or am I missing something?
--- Perhaps my initial point is that time does indeed catch up with us. And ageing, like parenthood, can be a serious reality check.
I am not a Kylie fan, but if her illness brings attention to the disease, it can have a positive legacy.
I was once riding high on a career. Then, one day, I saw a doco on Africa. Suddenly everything inside me went quiet. It was as though the entire world had stopped. The experience touched my heart and I searched deep inside myself for an answer as to what I could do to help.
I'm back now, re-launching my career. The reason you haven't heard from me for the last ten years is coz I've been busy savin' the lions and tigers.
.... there is no semblance of rock 'n roll around here!
