Konfabulator

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Anyone else using Konfabulator yet?

Since it's just been bought by yahoo I reckon it'll be getting a fair bit of coverage in the geek-press (not to mention lots of lovely new widgets).

It's a simple little program which runs xml/javascript widgets on your desktop to do all sorts of simple tasks.

Works on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Some widgets include:

a widget that tracks selected Ebay auctions for you
widgets that read various RSS news feeds
widgets that give you localised weather reports for the next few days
and loads more (there are currently nearly 700 widgets)

widgets can be made yourself (all you need is a bit of JavaScript knowledge) and can be set up to access any rss/xml feeds you can get your hands on.

Example: Since QB uses an ingenious phpBB/rss backend to a run the "news" sections on a lot of the sites he's created, you could theoretically create a widget that connected to these RSS feeds to display the latest news from all these sites (Ghostdance, Violets etc etc) in one little desktop application.

Yahoo! acquires Konfabulator

Yesterday, Yahoo! acquired Konfabulator, a three-man software team responsible for creating the cult widgets that have been so popular on Apple Macs since 2002, and which are now included in the Mac's operating system. Comment: On the surface, this acquisition seems inconsequential given the tiny size of Konfabulator. Scratch below the surface and you might see the potential that Yahoo! has bought into. The power of widgets is that they provide the freedom to do pretty much whatever you want them to. There is a growing developer community that has built widgets for visualising all aspects of the operating system - such as signal strength and clock - at the same time bringing a diverse range of web-based information directly to the desktop tool bar. Untethering web content from the browser is a powerful advocate for the use of web services, and widgets take this one step further by linking purpose with user experience. :innocent:

Well I was handsome and I was strong

"Did my singing please you?"
"No! The words you sang were wrong!"
