You can pick Euros up from the Post Office; just turn up with a wad of £££ and they'll change them.

or you can just take your bank card with you and withdraw the euros over there. Sometimes it is cheaper than exchanging money in the UK.

Exactly, that's what I do. And risk of loosing money (literally or by theft) is considerably smaller. And besides: Isn't it a nice European feeling that you can use your local banc card in other countries? I'm still amazed and amused.... :notworthy:

Most UK bankcards do not work outside the UK except in the Republic of Ireland. You have to apply for one and when you do they try to convince you to get a creditcard. It is even worse transferring money to a Euro account. System is quite inflexible - no wonder PayPal is catching up on them - despite the charges.

Looks like the British are even more Euro-sceptical than the Swiss - or, rather: depend considerably less on the EU and have more opportunities to spend their holidays in their own country - or whatever...

But don't get me started on transferring money to a bank account in another country. I've experienced it recently, made me think I live on another planet! Had to have it done via paypal and it's still a rip off. Incredible!

@MF: Yes, but it's ridiculous what you have to pay if somebody from home calls you on the mobile and you're abroad. I can only use my mobile for text messages abroad if I don't want to spend a fortune.

I have a feeling it will all be a bit hazy.

Strangely enough, my mobile bill that's just come, covering my recent trip to Amsterdam, was cheaper than the previous month's bill.

Aha! But Gripper's given me a few tips on how to handle you. I'm particulalrly looking forward to trying out the arm-outstreched, hand-on-her-head defensive manoeuvre. :innocent:
