But that's by-the-by. The thing that p!sses me off about the whole situation is that Richard Bacon denied that his comment was meant to be a "fat-gag", which quite frankly is so big a pile of bull$hit as to be an insult to people's intelligence.

I heard Les Carter (from Carter The Unstoppable...) on Radio 5 t'other night and they were asking him for his views on it. He was made famous after Rugby tackling 'Pip' Schofield on the Smash Hits awards. - Scholfield had made several caustic comments about Carter's lack of talent.

As the presenter on Radio 5 said, it would have been hilarious if the fat bastard from the Magic numbers had done the same to Smokey Bacon.

Clearly it was a fat gag as you say, and at best it appears to have been untactful... Maybe he though the mike was off or something I dunno. Actually you'd know more about this, this whole "off the record" business we get when politicians say stuff they shouldn't, is there a basis for that? It seems ludicrous when we hear a defence of a comment from an MP which consists of "I thought it was off the record" - did you say it or didn't you?

Widdecombe rewrites the sticks and stones fairly well. True, comments can be harmful and she's been on the end of an awful lot in her time I'm sure being in such a public position. The Magic Numbers have been, and will continue to be, although they've been known to make fat comments about them. Which leads me to the conclusion this is just to drum up a bit of publicity. And it's worked.

AFAIK the "off the record" thing with politicians tends to be an MP effectively saying to a journalist "Hey, here's something you might like to know (as you're a mate) but you can't print it, or at least if you do it didn't come from me, OK?" sort of thing.

I don't know, maybe you're right and the storming off thing is a publicity stunt. I don't think it was an accident though; Richard Bacon's known for his "cheeky comment" type delivery. Personally I've always thought he's just a cnut but there you go.

As for the "fat gag" thing it comes down to human nature doesn't it; we all make cracks based on other people's appearance from time to time even though we know it's a shallow thing to do Yeah, sure, in an ideal world people would just judge The Magic Numbers on the quality of their music, but this isn't an ideal world.

Also, plenty of women who aren't fat think that they are; it's a pretty nasty thing to say about someone who may be sensitive about their self-image.

This is all pretty much exactly the opposite of what I was arguing on Rosalie's "Fat Fairies" thread, but hey, whoever said I had to be consistent?
