What makes a "Prog Rock"band?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

I was listening to an old tape of "Dark Side Of The Moon",nicked from my Dad years ago,along with some Jethro Tull and Rush tapes and was wondering when did "Prog Rock"stop,or did/has it stopped.
What makes a Prog band?,is it the time scale,69? till 78?,is it just bands like the above that can claim the name?.It got me thinking,can't the Sisters and other "post punk" bands,PIL,UK Decay,Skeletal Family ect also be considered a type of "Prog",did they not *progress* the punk movement to a higher level?,could "Elizium"not be a Prog Album,or has it been branded a Goth record,arn't Marrilion a prog band,any Ideas?.

Apparently there are still a few Prog bands around ,Porcupine Tree and God Speed You Black Emperor being a couple that my drum teacher (an old prog rocker) speaks highly of. Generally, I think that anything intelligent and above or outside the musical norm which shows a good degree of musicianship can be considered prog rock. However, I wouldn't class the Sisters as prog since, for once, they're a little too normal.

One of the bands I just love :notworthy:

Anyway, not into 'genres', so couldn't possibly be of any help, I just listen to whatever I like listening to..

I thought Godspeed was calles 'post rock'.

an olde phart finally gets round to replying:

at the time, you must remember, bands like The Van Der Graaf Generator, Genesis, Yes, ELP, The Mahavishnu Orchestra*, Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Hawkwind, King Crimson, Roxy Music et al. were all pretty cutting edge. As a teenager back then this was really exciting stuff and a big leap away from what was on Radio 1 (Peel/Freeman and later on Vance excepted). I still love that music, what I find hard to take are the new prog bands like IQ, Spock's Beard, Masque, Morse, World Trade and too many other outfits that just don't 'click' for me. And Mojo style journos trying to make a name for themselves by saying Radioheid are new prog are off their fcuking Radioheid's!


I will defend to my dying breath all the classic bands from the early to late 70s and those great albums, I just have a problem with anything after that.

I still don't like Marillion BTW

Prog Rock? Lots of melody, scale and time changes, long and comlicated guitar/keyboard solos, drum solos (yes, that can be possible), a vocalist that actually can sing, sometimes includes oriental/classical elements. Some better known Examples:
King Crimson, Marillion, Fish solo, Porcupine Tree, Rush, Yes...
Newer bands (prog-metal): Anathema or The Gathering (later albums).

Personally I'm not a big fan, but I quite like Marillion and Porcupine Tree...
