Poor Timsinister

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Technically parentheses are these ()

This ... is an ellipsis.

 I am genuinely ashamed.

Thank you, Mark, for saving me from further punctuation-related blunders! :notworthy:

As examples, the aforementioned punctuation should be in inverted commas, otherwise they affect the structure of the sentence in which they're contained :von:

[/Excessivelly pedantic typography nerd]

Now all we need is a markup nerd to come and tell us that we can't have spaces in our tag names

If you're going to close the tag "[/Excessivelly pedantic typography nerd]" then you need to open it beforehand, otherwise you can't close it.

Example:

[Excessivelly pedantic typography nerd]comic sans should be eliminated[/Excessivelly pedantic typography nerd]

Secondly, it isn't Typography (Typography is the study and process of typefaces) but rather Punctuation, so the tag is incorrect and should have read:

[/Excessivelly pedantic punctuation nerd]

And obviously he should have opened the tag beforehand, as previously stated.

Thirdly, "Excessivelly" is spelt "Excessively".

Spaces in tag names (or 'elements' to name them correctly), however, are fine. Even XML elements with attributes have spaces to divide the element from the attribute.

You're welcome.

So do you have a typeface without punctuation? :innocent:

With you on the Comic Sans thing though.

Typography is concerned with the visual presentational of the printed word.
Punctuation is concerned with the structure of sentences.

The difference between parentheses and an ellipsis is of semantic and structural importance to a document, not of presentational importance.

So unless your remarks had been about the font weight, design and font-face of the elipsis and/or parentheses, then it's punctuation pedantry rather than typographic pedantry.

Eleven pages of TIM-bashing (frowned upon in some parts of Glasgow) go unremarked, but a handful of pedantic posts on punctuation invoke the wrath of Herr Administrator.

Go figure.

And if the topic was "Poor Pedants", then the Tim bashing would be frowned upon. But it isn't. Like it or not, the Tim bashing is (shock horror) on topic

But looking at your avatar, you've aged since I last met you.

Very likely. I've obviously been so smashed I've not remembered signing on to the Imperial Navy either...
