how do you organise your record collection?
my system is by genre/interband connections, I mean, I could never put Revolting Cocks next to Roxy Music

Hmm, I put my official cds in a rack (at least those that fit in) and they're in alphabetical order (as I'm shit at genres), those that don't fit in the rack are just in random order, and bootlegs all get a number when they get in after which I sort them by number

As for my vinyls, those are sorted album-ep-single and after that mostly alphabetical...

At the moment the problem is however my printer broke down and I did not have the chance yet of sorting boots of over a month

(but it returned today, however I will have to make my standard cover less black-intensive

)

My records go either in a record holder, or on the box I keep my (few) cassettes in, since the holder is too full.

@ Blast - I just organise my collection by alphabetical order... I like having odd bands sitting next to each other. Plus, whenever I've tried to organise it by style (and God knows, I have) I just end up getting confused because most *decent* bands rarely stay in one particular genre like that, and I end up just despairing of the whole concept entirely.
(Also reminds me how much dodgy goff and EBM I own, ha!

)

So, we have Joy Division next to Grace Jones, The Birthday Party next to the Beastie Boys, and Einsturzende Neubauten next to the Eurythmics.

Actual records are just in random piles (half the fun is sorting through them to find what I'm looking for).

Official CDs strictly alphabetical by artist (sorting through a couple of hundred CDs isn't quite the same fun).

Bootleg CDs kept separate, but also alphabetical by artist (except for the Sisters stuff, which get special treatment).

Tapes are, um, mostly in boxes in a wardrobe in the bedroom.

We don't have a system as such more an anarchical method of placement. I try to do the alphabet thing....then it's a right pain when you buy new ones that pushes the last one on the shelf onto the next shelf down which in turn pushes the end one on that shelf down....and so on. Then of course the last one on the bottom shelf has to go across to the next set of shelves across the room, I guess you catch my drift.

Then there's the Gaz system which is rather similar to the Scotty 'left at my erse' system...but this is taken one step further as there are similar piles upstairs in the bedroom and bathroom...and of course the car (not so much of a prob at the mo at the Debaser mobile has no cd player and Gaz's motor is just being used as an extra storage facility.)

Add to that the bootleg chrome case which also succumbs to the alphabet thing coupled together with the LAME system.

And finally, there's the Ness ''I'm not having ANYTHING to do with that s**t says Gaz' shelves (I think that's where the Nolans would go.....)

Hey, that is my system!

Mine as well, but mostly I let new discs pile up for a couple of weeks after which I get tired of them laying there and do it after all

7"s: unsorted. Far too many to be bothered sorting at the moment.
12"s and Albums: approximately alphabetically. When they've been played they get bunged back in more-or-less where they came from.
Minidiscs because there's only about 100, I've managed to keep alphabetical.
CDs
The 200 most-played CDs are in my CD multiplayer. Choose a CD by remote control
The rest are in piles around the house. They generally get played through the DVD player which is hooked up to the hi-fi amp.

Apart from the Sisters boots; arranged chronologically by gig in a chrome carry-case:

Something went wrong with the image. I seem to have fixed it now.

Similar to Debaser's first point. In shelves, organised by pure intuition: what I listen to more often has to be more easy to reach, of course sorted by band, piled according to the release date.
Sisters bootlegs are something completely different: In their own cupboard, sorted by date.

@ James: Maybe "High Fidelity" would help...?

anything techno.. around 50 records in my record bag that I'm currently playing.. anything else is normally in no order whatsoever..

Vinyl and CDs: Alphabetical: band then albums/singles.
Bootlegs are ordered by date
Tapes are in a carrier bag.

All records filed alphabetically with LPs and 12s in together. 7" are also filed alphabetically on a different shelf.

Normal CDs are spilt in to album and singles both are alphabetical.

The bootleg CDs are another kettle of fish.

EATB, The Fall, March Violets, The m*****n, Rosetta Stone and The Sisters are on a set of shelves in proper cases and all the other bands are in a 1000 capacity case which is like Mark's.

Normal tapes are all together in no order and the bootleg tapes are in a massive box in the wardrobe.

Genre split for classical / non-classical; a further sub-division for foreign bands (of the type which could only ever achieve success in their own country). Any hints on how to create a combined alphabetical order for different writing systems.

Recordings are then filed alphabetically by artist/composer. Each band's contribution is filed in ascending chronological order of release. I don't have enough singles to make them relevant so they usually just tuck in next to the album from which they were culled.

The sole exception at the moment, thinking about this, is a Tarja Turunen solo single which is filed under Nightwish. And is rubbish.

hmmm... this has been a sore point for many years...

Used to have my CDs in good order - BEFORE moving together with my woman. She on the other hand rarely keeps the right disc in the corresponding sleeve!!! Argh!

I've given up long ago. I do manage to have CDs from different artists more or less in one place (one band, many CDs, almost same physical location), but every now and then I find an empty sleeve, or another sleeve containing two discs ... often neither of the two belong in the sleeve.
You see ... that's why I've given up. It's all material anyway, and in the long run that doesn't count as much

Alphabetical within genres, which does get confusing when bands can be put in more than one genre. Plus I have a pile of whit the fook was I thinking CDs
