How do you organise your record collection?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

A shelf of 10"s of all kinds

+ 6 D.J. Boxes for my techno/breaks/U.K. Hip-Hop/ U.S. stuff.

2 7" shelves 1 Funk/soul/reggae/ska etc. 1 Punk/metal/industrial/indie etc.

and all my C.D.s in a big mouldering pile, as they deserve.

"Main" bands get separate sections / shelves, ordered album/singles each chronologically.
All other stuff in alphabetical by band then chronologically.
"Current / recent listening has a spot near the hifi as I tend to listen to things for a while; you get in a zone sometimes.....

Slowly but surely moving to a complete digital solution.
As and when CD's get ripped (lossless) they get boxed up.
Most of my records are in boxes in the loft. I've got a mate who has access to a vacuum packer so they're all thick plastic vacuum sealed to stop them getting mouldy or damp.

I reckon in a year or so I'll just rip stuff to the PC and then stick it in the loft and do everything via media centre pc connected to the hifi using a pocket pc with wifi connection to act as the master remote control for the lot.

Getting the missus to figure out how to work it will be another matter, which is odd considering she's the one with the degrees and the MA....

I chose 'O' cos I don't have that many 'O's, and it illustrated the point nicely (ie you could see the rest of the alphabet in the piccy). One Dove just seemed the natural choice 8)

I went out with a large chested maiden from Manchester (God I miss them) who filed her collection by the first letter.
The 'T' section was a pretty busy.

Isn't it generally accepted practice to ignore a leading "The" when alphabetizing a list? (Obvious exception being "The The" ;))

Seeing as we're talking about digital storage. I've got most of my CDs ripped and I've got a PC with a bluetooth dongle. I'm using a smartphone app called Bemused to remotely control my music. Works like a charm and is better than a normal remote as it doesn't need to be line-of-sight :von:

Well, digitally speaking, my CDs that I've got round to mp3-ing (and all of my downloaded mp3s) are on my iPod and backed up on CD-Rs and DVD-Rs
