IPods for Anarchists (or so the Wired News article calls them):
Actually the EchoMp3 v1.4 is the height of geek-grunge chic. The gaffer-taped screen is perfectly 'distressed'. And all for €89.54 (pre-assembled version) or €73.81 for the kit version.

I'd get one if it wasn't for the fact that my soldering skills are really not up to those instructions...
Way cool.

Looks very cool to me...
Do you think it would be possible to make something like this with a hard disk thingy inside?

I was wondering the same actually. SD cards are a bit small (memory-wise)

well HDs are decreasing in size rapidly, so it's probably possible. Depends how much power/circuitry you'd need to spin/access the HD.
But, judging by the design of this thing, you could have a collection of 1GB flash cards with your music on, turning the memory into a form of removable media.

Christ, to cope with what's on my iPod at the moment, that would be 25 1GB cards, and at ~£40 even for the cheapest, you're better off getting an iPod.
Still, one ready-built EchoMp3, one 1GB SD card, one set headphones total around £100; cheaper than an iPod mini... A plan for mrs fiend's Christmas pressie methinks

Hmm, yes, I think the collection of cards would be cheaper too, and above all less likely to break down...
To have a HDD with shock protection you'll have to buy a laptop-HDD, which would be more expensive and all that...

Yeah. I have an MP3 player that's powered on one AAA battery. I wouldn't say that I'm a heavy MP3 player user, just put it on to walk up to the shop and back. The battery doesn't last long. At all. Maybe half a week if I'm lucky. And they are high quality batteries stolen from the NHSculprit wrote:I like it, but as a project rather than what you end up with.
note - one AAA battery powered??!!

Why not just drop your iPod down some stairs and then stick it back together?

And it's quite solid anyway, so don't know if you'll brake it that way...
Did yours start to cooperate by now Libby?
