How is it possible that Brian Eno's "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" is currently being used in a TV advertisement for Orange?

similarly we won't be hearing "this corrosion" as soundtrack to gambol&proctors latest dishwasher tablet eating through grease and grime; "when you dont see me" for bodyforms latest invisible panty-liner or "something fast" for immodium.ruffers wrote:Because they couldn't get clearance for that Sisters track they wanted to use.

I've always thought that the strains of "Some Kind of Stranger" would add an interesting additional dimension to those late night 'telephone chat line' adverts...Ozpat wrote:eastmidswhizzkid wrote:similarly we won't be hearing "this corrosion" as soundtrack to gambol&proctors latest dishwasher tablet eating through grease and grime; "when you dont see me" for bodyforms latest invisible panty-liner or "something fast" for immodium.ruffers wrote:Because they couldn't get clearance for that Sisters track they wanted to use.

i saw this advert one day last week. its part 1 of the 4 part piece isnt it? the really bare, stripped down version?
hmmm
as far as him creating that windows startup sound, i can imagine how that appealled to eno - the idea of being involved with mass-consumer technology, with something quite "cutting edge" and something that would become engrained in people's psyche and become almost a background sound to their lives... its not unlike the ideas he has used in some of his recent art installations.
art piggybacking on the great beast? maybe. infiltration in order to subvert? probably not.
oh well. art is as art does.
"burning airlines" to be used for american airlines, anyone?

<Bill Hicks> What kind of world are we living in where rock stars are doing adverts? What kind of Reagan wet-dream is this? God, does anyone remember when rock music had balls? When rock music had a conscience? When rock music was dangerous? When rock music meant something?
Can you imagine Keith Moon doing an advert? "When I'm doing a drum solo, and I've not had anything to eat for eight days, there's nothing I like more than a Hostess Twinkie." </Bill Hicks>
Jeez I have some of his routines by memory now?
Yeah, I know, exaggeration for comic effect, but still.

The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.

Depends who has the publishing rights. I've been quite distressed by Blockheads and Fall tracks on adverts, and the KFC Northern Soul campaign drove me up the piggin' wall, but more often than not the artists have no say in it. The Sissies never featured on any dodgy Goff/80s alt' comps till they broke with Warners
