In lieu of a new album...

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

*cover head from incoming missiles*

I don't think they will EVER release a new album. For these simple facts.

How old Is Eldo now 45-46?, The sisters were always very much a student band, It was cool to be into them. And as most of us here at one point or another have followed them almost as a religion. He's getting on in age and doesn't have the appeal he once had.

He's not signed to EAST WEST anymore and they hate him anyway.

He hates his fans and is a lazy bastard, Some thing that always got to me, if you going to enter the music biz, it's the fans that pay your F**KING wages at the end of the day. But he feels no obligation there at all.

And if he was going to release a new album, I would think its highly unlikely that a major record company is going to pick him up. He simply doesn't have the fan base anymore, And the sister can't be promoted like a young band. They all know he's difficult to work with and even thoughI'd love to see a new Album if i worked for a record campany I wouldn't take the band on knowing his rep. There's simply to much money at sake.

And one of the major things he would have to get over is the main stream music press, "MME", "Melody Maker"...they hate him and the band and have done for years...Might be a little hard to get positive feed back form them for promotion.

It might be hard even to get re-masters, as EAST WEST will think its not a money spinner, so they'll think whats the point.

Eldo has simply left it to late, 15 years is just too long.

Don't know what you think?

I think that, as he once was on strike whit WEA untill the contract gets finish, the others music companies can think that he could do it other time if the things don´t work like he wants.... so in my opnion THE SISTERS OF MERCY for the music companies can be a risky choice.....

and I think it´s the reason because THE sisters doesn´t have a new album.

I hope it gets sort out(SOMEDAY)

47.I'd say The Sisters stopped being cool when they teamed up with Jim Steinman..

"He hates his fans and is a lazy bastard, Some thing that always got to me, if you going to enter the music biz, it's the fans that pay your F**KING wages at the end of the day. But he feels no obligation there at all. "

Quite a lot of his fans loathe him as well.I seem to remember a crowd starting a "f**k off Eldritch" chant at one point. He'd probably claim that you have an obligation to him for having the sheer priviledge of listening to his music..
But your right in almost everything you say.The Sisters are pretty much a non-issue these days, and I think everyone knows the liklihood of a new album is zero.Funny thing is,he can't even cash-in on the goth-revival like Bauhaus/m*****n/Nephilim,as his frequent rants against that paticular subculture have turned them against him.So bang goes a large portion of a ready-made fanbase!

Having encountered my share of meth-casualties through the years, it's no wonder ol' eldo hasn't been up to snuff as of the past decade or two. By the sounds of it, he was quite the binger and I'd be surprised if he wasn't dealing with the damage done on a day to day basis.
Quite depressing...

The use and abuse of amphetamine, methamphetamine or crystal methamphetamine can create symptoms that resemble several types of mental illness. People have been known to suffer from visual and auditory hallucinations, depression, obsessive behaviors, panic attacks, intense anger and paranoia. More people than we realize have suffered from amphetamine induced psychosis, which can best be described as a paranoid state that develops after ingesting large amounts of amphetamines. When a person experiences this type of psychological state, many have committed suicide. The long term effects of amphetamine use are severe and can be fatal. Liver damage, brain damage, malnutrition, kidney disorders, impaired immune system and blood clots are just some of the medical consequences a person can experience.

It just baffles me that an intelligent man like himself can be so bloody stupid at the same time...

If he had only been more flexible, he could have made a fortune; and made a real mark of
n the music world, rather than a little dent.

He's been getting it wrong since he sold the back-catalogue...

I don't understand why he feels The Sisters deserve a large advance and a multi-album deal when it's a lot smarter to sign a one-off advertising/distribution deal with a major and keep the lion's share of the profits or go for a rolling deal with likes of Sanctuary.

I'd actually have more confidence in them getting a deal if they weren't regularly touring, can't explain why though..

Anyone remember why the Mute deal fell through?

What happened to the 1991 truce with East West which involved Sisters records retaining WEA distribution in America (to satisfy Time Warner) and coming out via Mute (to satisfy the band - and Mute)?

We had to get away from Elektra, but we weren't allowed to move outside the Warner family. Mute was the only Warner-distributed label to have any interest in the band, and we liked them. We were getting on fine until the first Sisters/Mute record was due to come out.

Mute sent a fax to London, telling East West that East West's poor scheduling would damage the band in America. Nothing unusual (in our case) about the fax or its content. Unfortunately Mute sent a copy to Andrew, whereupon East West terminated the deal.

Since then the Sisters have had no representation in America. Having been on Elektra, we haven't really noticed the difference.

At this point Von tends to spin his yarn about how much it costs to distribute and publicise a record properly. Not for him the satisfaction of making a good piece of work and having it enjoyed by a band of committed fans. It's the hit parade or bust, apparently.

Yes, here we go again, but much of what folks say is true. There's just no doubt.

Von must live well enough, bottom line. To go out at age 46, 47, and scrounge again to release something independent--the man cannot be bothered.

He tried the majors, they weren't interested. He shopped his tapes around over the last three years, told them his terms, and they said, 'no', and why not? Would you sign a guy who went on strike for seven years, demand absolute control over 'the band', soon to be reduced to himself, a few boxes of microchips, and whoever else he can find busking on the street to go on tour?

I still say the fact that he was 'staggered' by the record exec who said the Sisters weren't major label material indicates the man is kind of out of it. Yes, they did a million an album. When?

One question...it can't be cheap or easy to put his tours together. How much money can he possibly clear on those tours? To take his show on the road across Europe (and we all know there's no way he can get to the USA again)...must be a huge hassle. How much does he get? He has to pay a bunch of folks, etc, etc, and the lazy s*** can't even bothered selling merchandise execpt at gigs.

Maybe it's the drugs, maybe it's the booze, the hard living, who the ***k knows. Von can kiss my a**. He's done it to himself, asking for millions when he probably couldn't move 5,000 copies of an album State-side, for instance. He's making me wish The Merry Thoughts put out a new album, yes, they sound Von-ish, but have some good tracks. The lazy ***t can't even put up the lyrics to Crash and Burn. What a bum.

There, I feel better now. I hope his albums drop down to $6.99 at Tower records....they're already in that nice $10 range, maybe they'll attract a soul or two...

Such a shame, such a shame. Just swallow your pride and go with a small label within a major and get a team and put out a bleeping album so you can finally crash and burn for good.

This says more about modern day A&R than it does about the Sisters.

Where do you buy your music? All the Sisters albums cost me £16.99.

Now, you see, if *my* fans talked like this, I wouldn't be motivated to put out another album for them either. Kate Bush took a similarly decades-long break but you didn't her fans yelling "Kate can kiss my ass". Even though, unlike Von, she didn't tour Europe nearly every year (barely left the house at all, actually).

And then when she finally got around to it it was bad-ass.

Do fans not think that there might be a connection between their own over-entitled, abusive, "YOU OWE US" attitude, and Eldritch leaning in the direction of "in that case, p*ss on you"?

I don't know, as of what I got, it seems he has always applauded his fans having a critical view on whatever, stimulate them thinking, and probably would rather surprise us than put up his middle finger... I also think you should take the arse kissing with a pinch of salt, it's just about life going on with or without it, as it is going right now  Or not :?:

For me it is the not knowing.

If he has "retired" from the idea of entering a studio then that is up to him. If he wants to continue as a live-only band then great; I'll still bust a gut and spend my hard earned cash to watch him play.

It is his life and he can do with it whatever he wants - but he does have people who are interested in how his (musical) life pans out and these are the people who have helped make him the (fairly) rich man that he must be.

A simple yearly email would suffice - look at Wayne, Fish and others who are still musically active. Even Kate "recluse for 10 years" Bush communicates through her website to let people know what she is up to - whereas someone we know and admire doesn't.

The lack of communication is the killer. Do we mourn the end of a great band or do we remain dangling at the end of Von's strings?

..and off the soap box...

No she didn't. The website came online at the same time the album came out. No-one even knew she'd had a kid until little Bertie was almost starting kindergarten. (Believe me, as an old-school "LoveHound" I know these things.) In comparison, Von has been positively outgoing and engaging.

From 1993 to 2005, the Sisters have given us (those of us in Europe and selected parts of America, anyway) tour after tour. In the same period, Kate gave her fans diddly-squat. Of course you had grumpy posts along the lines of "there will never be another album", but there wasn't the kind of anger, sarcasm and nastiness from the fanbase. Perhaps this is because Kate generally suffers fools more gladly than Eldo - or perhaps because she's a woman.

In any case, I wonder what people who really seem to loathe and despise Eldritch are doing demanding that he work on a studio album for them.

In short, no. Do you seriously think the reason he's not releasing any records is because he's cross that fans keep demanding one? I'm sorry, but that's several rungs down the ladder from 'the dog ate my homework'...

Er, no. What I said was that perhaps part of the reason he's not more motivated to release records is because he's perhaps offended by "fans" actually being abusive towards him.

The difference is between saying "Where's that new album already, Von?" and saying "Von can kiss me where the sun don't shine", "Eldritch is a lazy shiftless bastard", "Eldritch owes me a new album and I'll hate him forever if I don't get one NOW NOW NOW!", etc.

As a muso myself, I know that would certainly put me off.

If you're that easily put off by commentaries such as these, maybe the showbiz isn't the right place for you, Blackrose.

There are several reasons why I choose not to waste my time trying to make it as a professional musician, and the fact that "fans" seem to think that they have a right to personally abuse musicians because they've bought some records or gone to some concerts is certainly one of them.

Thanks for proving my point, by the way: perhaps Eldritch is "easily put off by commentaries such as these" and doesn't see why he should do anything to make the lives of people who makes such "commentaries" more pleasant.[/url]

I'm most certain that Eldritch is intelligent enough to feel the love between these lines. And I'm even more certain that he's not more often confronted with abusive fan commentaries than at his random festival appearances.
I guess he can live with the burden that is a "demanding fan".
