All the new stuff this year has been s**t, except for Malcom Middleton's new album.
But this year I did discover Shriekback, Johnny Thunders, and Charles Manson's obscure album Lie.

I just bought "Anthems" by Laibach yesterday and was mightily impressed. I only have "Opus Dei" other than that, which was acquired about 5 years ago.boudicca wrote: This year, it has been Laibach , Kraftwerk , and Swans.
The songs from WAT sound good... Can you recommend one of their albums to listen to next?
So, I'm saying, for this year... Late re-discovery of Laibach, a return to form from Rammstein, and a band called Near Meth Experience sound quite good from the (very dodgy) bootleg I heard
bands of the year...
Seth lakeman, the bleeding hearts, blyth power, spear of destiny, NYAAA, B-bang Cider/ monique maasen (has ANYONE heard of this lot? they're amazing!) X-japan, Abigail's Mercy, pornovurt, NFD, Moriarti and the Sith...

Where to begin..Mr. Wah wrote:

Anything pre Opus-Dei - Untitled, Nova Akropola etc - tends to be a lot harsher, more minimal and involves a lot of Slovenian and political diatribes
Personally I would probably say try Let It Be..
Fine its full of Beatles covers but by heck they don't have make their best effort to get Lennon rolling in his grave!
Failing that the NATO Live album is bloody excellent and covers a lot of their career up to 91..
You can turn your back on a person, but never turn your back on a drug, especially when its waving a razor sharp hunting knife in your eye

WAT is a great album - one of these few (and I MEAN few) that I can ever listen to straight through without skipping a track .Mr. Wah wrote: The songs from WAT sound good... Can you recommend one of their albums to listen to next?
NATO itself, the studio album, is also very good - and very funny, if you find the idea of "The Final Countdown" being growled in a poker-faced Slovenian accent funny. Which you undoubtedly must . Also has a fantastic cover of DAF's "Alle Gegen Alle"... you might have thought it was impossible to beat the original BUT IT IS!
Also, Let it Be is a good one. Particularly if you're familiar with the Beatles Album (one of my earliest musical purchases)... but even if you're not it barely matters. No-one else does cover versions like Laibach - making the most innocent lyric take on an entirely different meaning, funny and bloody alarming at the same time.
Uneasy listening.

Editors cd is this year's discovery along with a greek singer called Dinos Sadikis
All in all a good (musical)year though i ll never forgive Mozz for not including "speedway" on the Earl s court live cd

Yes, I've heard all of those cover versions you mention; they're all on "Anthems." And you are quite right... They sound great, are very amusing and are quite scary if you stop to think for a minute.boudicca wrote:No-one else does cover versions like Laibach - making the most innocent lyric take on an entirely different meaning, funny and bloody alarming at the same time.
Their treatment of Queen's "One Vision" I like in particular.
I'm off to buy WAT... 'cause it's the only one available in HMV Hong Kong.
Thanks for the advice.

I love their cover of the Final Countdown - I like how they make it sound all nationalisticMr. Wah wrote:Their treatment of Queen's "One Vision" I like in particular.boudicca wrote:No-one else does cover versions like Laibach - making the most innocent lyric take on an entirely different meaning, funny and bloody alarming at the same time.

Yeh, if I had to pick a single Laibach track, that would be it.Mr. Wah wrote:Their treatment of Queen's "One Vision" I like in particular.

The Sisters Of Mercy - in every respect
excellent gigs - saw 4 of them in 2004, enjoyed (all kind of) their audio and video recordings much as well, they are still the best
(and their members are nice guys actually)
Die Krupps
great gig, great from records, very nice persons (and funny video of 'To The Hilt' )
Laibach
particularly due to their groovy gig and funny videos as well (didn't listen to their records much in 2004).
New Model Army
enjoyed them (and Justin Sullivan) only from CDs in 2004, but I did many many times.
Ladytron
the last album was very good surprise for me
Peru 4080, Smurphs and Rhombus
- thanks for good shows in Leeds
Deine Lakaien
their gig in Hildesheim (just before the Sisters) made me think they are still a very good band, although I'm not their fan anymore...
Siouxsie and Joy Division
- they are still in my playlist as well
...and now... look again the top of the post...
