Andrew and politics

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

With an American tour about to start, I'm pretty curious to hear from all those who will attend one or more gigs what remarks Andrew will make about American politics. He is always in for a good statement, that we know. We all know he is more on the left side of the political spectrum (or am I wrong here) and always showed interest in politics. This already goes back to the days of The Reptile House.

Does anyone know if Andrew supports/supported specific organisations, political parties, ....

I seem to remember something about Andrew being involved in (helping to organise?) Rock Against Racism concerts in the late 70s.

Their first gig was at a CND benefit, I believe.

They support Amnesty International on their website at the moment.

He's basically anti-authoritarian and generally left-wing, based on what he's said in the past.

Er, the stuff about "Geopolitics and the War on Terror" is still there, as is the crack about why evolution can't be taught in Kansas. I assume you're only referring to that brief crack on the front page - which was certainly not "we hate Americans"?

I believe it was 'the USA is a rogue state', and 'personal oil' and 'ignorant zealots'. Not far-fetched.

But we are a market, and we want The Sisters. Even if the president is a 'sock puppet' with a questionable 'gene pool'.

Oh, we'll a comment, I'm sure...

Would be quite a joke if he'd be denied to access the States because of what's on his site

Those comments seem to be aimed directly at the administration more than the American people. I doubt a guy as intelligent as our Andy would make a sweeping comment against the American people, many of whom loathe the regime as much, if not more, than he does.

Amen.

Love you long time is a reference to Full Metal Jacket, no? And hence indirectly to America's role in screwing up the rest of the world? Or am I just reading too much into things again?

Certainly. Sadly, in the USA, too many people take barbs like this personally as if there is no separation between the policies of the government and the American people themselves. He's made plenty of comments about the ignorance of the American people and how insular the nation is, which is largely true. But the administration is another story, and we now how low he regards the current 'strain' of Republicans pulling the strings. Not pretty. And I'm sure he loathes the decision by Blair & Co to buddy up so closely with Bush, accepting the UK's role as lieutenant of the USA on the world stage.

Well, in 2003 it was 'This war is wrong!'. In 2006...'this war is....still going?'

But what can he do? He's gotta eat, so why not take the filthy American monies? Even if our money is all the same size....

Is a nutty lefty, but intelligent enough to make nice. I'm convinced that teh "bite the silver bullet" is a reference to swallowing pride, making nice with goths and other Americans, and trying to drum up enough interest to make that album. After all, he's now 46, and not getting younger.
