New songs (old question, I'm sure)

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Don't you still get a "performance royalty" though? Otherwise what would be the point of boybands releasing cover-version after cover-version?

Thanks for the answers/thoughts. I should find Andrew Sisters version asap and listen to it.

@ Markfiend:
Are you talking about live concerts? I'm not sure whether band have to pay for performing covers live. I would have guessed so, but not sure.

No, I mean on records. IIRC the royalties get split 50-50 between the writers and the performers.

they still get the money from the records sold. AND the main reason for doing covers, they generate the first interest. A lot of music careers started by a coversong. (HIM f.ex.)
P.S. boybands generate just money for their producers and record companies. They usually have just a "performance contract" where they get monthly paid, as they seldom write any songs. :P

the formula goes like this:

write songs > generate copyright > sell millions > get rich and live happily ever after

sing songs written by others> have a short fame whilst you look good > live on the dole from 40 on.

:P
Put their heads on f*cking pikes in front of the venue for all I care.

This is why Gary Barlow (who wrote all of Take That's songs (except the covers)) is still living in the lap of luxury whereas the rest of them (with the obvious exception of that tw@t Robbie Williams) had to beg him to go back on the road.

The Verve's hit Bittersweet symphony relies heavily on a loop sampled from a Stones song.

The Stones took them to court, and now get close to %100 of the royalties. So every time that song is played they get some cash, but what his name from the Verve gets nothing.

So it depends on what the contract says, or in the absence of one, who your lawyer is.

See also differences between rights to perform, release audio, or video re: Gimme Shelter.
Eldritch talks about it somewhere... maybe on the website?

Here we go: http://www.thesistersofmercy.com/gen/fa ... aqnorm.htm
Why isn't 'Gimme Shelter' included on 'Wake'?

Because the Rolling Stones apparently refused to grant the so-called "synchronisation rights" which are necessary for visual cover versions

Spot the common denominator between the two songs you mention.

Also there's a Carter USM song including the words "Goodbye Ruby Tuesday" which the Stones (or IIRC Andrew Loog Oldham) sued over.

The lesson: get a good lawyer!

All right all right all right!

Come Together is not a cover! I've edited the post to reflect as much! Stop hitting me! I'll talk! Anything you want! I thought it was the same f--king Beatles song half the bands in the world have covered!

Seriously, my apologies to the die-hards out there. It's good to know there's one more new original I didn't know about.

Here is my plan. I will gather some of the best sources of these songs through weeding (though if anyone wants to post superior versions online somewhere, that'd be most helpful). Obviously, seeing as how there are no soundboard recordings post-early 90s, I will do the best I can based on these recommendations. Then, I'll weed the collection. Sound good?

The best sounding version of We Are The Same Suzanne has to be this version.
