OK.
So the Sisters are the best thing (musically) in my life at the moment, but I wanna branch out. I know everyone gets all uppity when us noobs call em goth but lets just say for argument sake that they are goth.
Basically I'm looking for bands (don't have to be from the 80s) that are goth-rock (or similar to the sisters).
I listened to some m*****n, mm, it was good until the singing came in. I'd prefer deep vocals.
So, if anyone would care to recommend some bands then I'd be very grateful

As far as goth goes, I'm not too sure. Have you listened to anything by Mr Ray?
His website has some incredibly good songs from his back catalogue on it. I'd recommend Mexico Sundown Blues, Rev Rev Lowrider, Third Generation, The Dancing Crow. They progress into more techno than rock, but have a really good feel about them.
Failing that, you could try some Visual Kei bands (I can recommend Moi Dix Mois), or some slightly more upbeat goth (Ghost Dance, The March Violets), or my band if you feel desperate.
Enjoy.

Some more recent recommendations may unfold before your eyes here, young Jedi.
Not that I ever tried out one of those newcomers.

If you want a bland exact copy of Von et al, The Merry Thoughts would be the first port of call. For something resembling early Sisters, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Joy Division and Black Wire, while not identical in sound, are likely to appeal to such tastes

Well... As long as you don't forget that there's much more to The Sisters than gothic rock, I guess that's okay. (sorry for playing the old fool)
Why hasn't anybody mentioned Fields of the Nephilim (whose last album was what you can call a pleasant surprise) yet ? Did I miss sth ?
And there's even more non gothic recommandations to be made...

I was gonna write down FOTN as well!
Ok, good music :
Curve -Industrial sounding rock before it was fashionable.
Wumpscut and Project Pitchfork - Both very good at what they do. If you like German IDM.
The Jesus And Mary Chain. Just because.
12 Rounds - British band that relocated to the US and signed to Nothing Records. Vocals to die for. They've released two excellent albums. The guitarist engineered most of With Teeth for NIN.
Oh, and Saints Of Eden - The guitarist who was in The Nefilim's pet project. And my mate Flow plays drums in them.

Hum... Guys there's something I realized some time ago. Those records you're talking about aren't especially easy to get hold off nowadays...
For instance I wanted to get new CD copies of Christian Death's first and Catastrophe ballet (preferably Gitane Demone in the nude cover ) to replace my old tapes that were pretty much worn out. Plus other things such as Lycia, etc. It took me weeks to get them !
In my mind that was all pretty common, only my recollection was ten years old !
Note : of course things are different, easier, when you live in a capital or are ready to order from the Net. But I'm weak and I buy my records the old way. In stores.

Jesus and Mary chain, of course ! They used to have a prehistoric drum machine, and they're the Masters of feedback. Not particularly goth, but a must if you'te into Body electric / Anaconda / Adrenochrome.
Talking of Jesus and his pals, Black rebel motorcycle club's first two are highly recommendable. Third album is crap and soooo boring.

Just listen to Pornography by the Cure repeatedly. That's my recommendation.

Yeah, but that's another band that doesn't want to be called goth !
The deluxe reissues are awesome.
If we go that way, you simply can't ignore Suicide, The Stooges, The Velvet Underground, David Bowie...
Why ? Just because there simply wouldn't have been any gothic-or-whatever-you-may-call-it rock without those guys !

I'd definitely agree with the Stooges, VU, Suicide and Bowie
I'd probably add (to the lists above):
The Fall
and I'd censor:
Screaming Marrionettes
(sorry Scotty, but they were bloody awful)
Edit: almost missed "Atomic Kitten" on Scotty's list

Why did nobody tell me before? And, after I read the name that often, why didn`t I look for him on the web? Okay, it all sounds a bit like Bontempi Homeorgan, but that`s only sound.. Maybe eldery synths.. on which James Ray makes bloody BRILIANT music! Wowowow!
Oh, and back on topic: Funhouse are quite okay, a bit monotone to me. Older stuff by Garden Of Delight sounds very right, if you manage to ignore the daft lyrics.

Now it goes without saying that all these artists (at least those I mentioned) made great records, mediocre records, and bad records.
So I don't know if that long list is really of much help. I said Bowie, and you could be unfortunate enough to pick "Let's dance" and you'd thought - with much reason - that it's utter crap, it's not even remotely goth nor even a bit dark and that the grey beard who recommended it is outta his mind.
On that last point you'd be wrong because that's not what I had in mind. And my beard ain't grey.
In the same vein Christian death / Valor = (except fot Atrocities, which reminds me I forgot Mephisto waltz)

You mentioned "The Jesus and Mary Chain" but not "Echo and the Bunnymen". What's up with that?
They go together like Von and Male Pattern Baldness.

London after Midnight are excellent, but suffer from the lack of output.Listen to "Let me break you",which is brilliance on a level with fifty dancing monkeys.
FOTN, "Elysium" is as good as any Sisters effort, but the band imploded, and have become fairly anal retentive now that it's just the mock spooky lead singer.
Christian Death, without Valor Kand singing(notble exception being "strange fortune")
Merry Thoughts have one good song, called "Will You",and that's about it..

I second the Velvet Underground and Suicide. The former is just plain brilliant, the latter was one of my inspirations to make music.
Also, has anyone mentioned Siouxsie's other band, The Creatures? Find the album "Boomerang", listen to it on repeat.

I would second Curve, they were broody without being downright goth at all, and they sounded far better than Garbage..
Best albums to check out are
Pubic Fruit, Doppelganger and Cuckoo, or The Way of Curve compilation..
All of these can easily be found on eBay for not too much $$$$...
