Have we never done this before?
In the age of ipods and invisible music, is album art dying?
*cue Dvorak's Hovis Tune*
Was I a member of the last generation to remember fondly the thrill of taking the little booklet or gatefold sleeve out of a fresh musical purchase and seeing what aesthetic delights were in store? Seems that way .
So, what's yer favourite album art then? Mines is...
Covenant - Europa
Dead Can Dance - Spleen and Ideal
Diamanda Galas - Plague Mass
Einstuerzende Neubauten - Haus Der Luge
Foetus - Deaf!
PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Laibach - Opus Dei, Nato
Nitzer Ebb - That Total Age
Siouxsie - A Kiss In The Dreamhouse
Sisters - Some Girls...
Patti Smith - Horses
Swans - Greed/Holy Money, Public Castration Is A Good Idea
I'm an *artist*!
I thought I was the only person who did that. It's not so much the artwork I miss ,rather something to read, besides the usual thank you's and who produced the thing.a.r.kane wrote:It's not the art I miss, but the smell. I really miss pulling the record out of it's sleeve, putting it on the turntable then sticking my head in the sleeve............... the smell. the smell......
The crackle and the hiss, well the anticipation of what you're about to hear really......

Yes, but nobody wants to serve you when you have a record sleeve on your nogginboudicca wrote:You can get books in Dumbarton these days I hear...Pat wrote:It's not so much the artwork I miss ,rather something to read, besides the usual thank you's and who produced the thing.

You may be right unfortunately, but I don't care. 12" covers will always be better than cheap CD covers, not to mention MP3s ! I'll keep buying vinyls no matter what. Call me old fashioned.boudicca wrote: Was I a member of the last generation to remember fondly the thrill of taking the little booklet or gatefold sleeve out of a fresh musical purchase and seeing what aesthetic delights were in store? I love the crackles of the dead wax before the side starts. The smell of vinyl is addictive, yes.
I bought two 7" singles, new releases, recently. Some bands are still keeping the faith, and so am I, by buying them.

I tell you with a fine hi-fi equipment it sounds just as good (if not better) as CD.

But I don't order much from the net. I like the friendly atmosphere of independent record shops. Call me really old fashioned.
Plus I'm a good client and I get discounts.

About 18 months ago I bought Bloc Party's debut single (500 limited edition blah blah etc etc) of ebay. When I received it and took it out of the cardboard sleeve you could tell it was mint and had never been taken out of the inner sleeve let alone played. The inner sleeve (think a cross between a cheap plastic bag and cling-film) was still compressed against the vinyl. When I lifted it back from one side to look in the opening ...not a dust particle in sight but I just had to have a sniff. Heaven.
I love the smell of new vinyl in the morning.

Already stated.
And this, too. Except that one's actually been on the turntable and isn't just pinned above my bed for the sentimental value

I've always liked the covers that didn't feature a picture of band members, art in it's self, rather than a promo' picture.

Being brave is coming home at 2am half drunk, smelling of perfume, climbing into bed, slapping the wife on the arse and saying,"right fatty, you're next!!"
