I've always viewed myself as a cyberpunk and The Sisters as, probably, the first cyberpunk band (in the same way that Billy Idol most certainly wasn't). There's a certain element of dystopia and nihilism prevalent throughout the lyrics from The Reptile House onwards. Particularly with the choice of metaphor and imagery.

i used to consider myself a goth, even dyed my hair at one point and spent pretty much every weekend at the local goth club. then it gaot all silly with dress codes and stuff and i found myself ostracized due to my love of blue denim flares.

Well first, cyberpunk has never been and hopefully never will be a "scene", so you can't compare it to goth, for instance. What's more, the term was invented by science-fiction authors, not journalists, and that also makes a huge difference IMO.
What's cyberpunk ? A very twisted and very cruel vision of the future, basically.
It includes drugs, corporations, violence, corruption, music, technology, body modifications, cyberspace, pollution, style, medias...
And very little hope.

To add a little further from my POV on cyberpunk. It's more a "state of mind", the expression of individuality and a reaction to the excesses of the corporate world. Outside the corporate enclaves, which retain some sembalance of "normality" and safety, most of the social order has broken down, democratic government is no longer represtentative of anything, even itself.

To a certain extent it's a "survival of the fittest" kind of environment, but that's just what appears on the surface. There is a social order of somekind, but it's far more tribal, less structured and anarchistic. There is a form of order within the chaos.

Yes, there is very little hope, but the heros (mainly anti-heros) who are part human and part machine, show more humanity than the unchanged humans who run the morally corrupt corporations/governments. In an immoral world, the amorality of the anti-hero is the only morality there is.

Look for books by William Gibson, Rudy Rucker, Philip K. Dick and Neil Giamon, to name a few. To a certain extent, some of the manga films are cyberpunk, otherwise films like Bladerunner, Brazil, Hardware/Mark 13, Rollerball, Mad Max and Deathrace 2000. Some, like the Mad Max films have a post-apocalyptic or post-industrial backdrop.

And don't get me started on Cybergoths.

As for the cybergoths and rivitheads...another group of fashion victims to fleece. Style over substance.

That's exactly the point. Cyberpunk is in its very essence a political genre, a depiction of grim days to come. Cyberpunk authors are visionaries (or at least very clever social critics).
Don't forget that most cyberpunk literature was written in the 80s.

Don't forget Tron ! I know it's Walt Disney, it's for the kids, blah blah blah... It's cyberpunk nonetheless.
And also Robocop.
