Why "Von" ?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering why everyone's using the term "Von" when they attempt to refere to Herr The Sisters Of Mercy? I am a "more-or-less-old-but-not-that-old-fan-but-not-fanatical-fan-type-of-the-band" kind of fan, so there is a lot of stuff that I do not understand about the band. Fortunately, most of the time, I don't want to understand them. But I am more or less intrigued about this "Von" alias for mr. Eldritch.

Thanks in advance for the knowledge-owner out there.

Because Von's a railroad, but now it's done.

In the early nineties, Eldritch (ne: Taylor) had a strong admiration for all things Dutch, South African and then German. From the bands early incarnation as Joey and the Edam Munchers to Herman and the Germans. It was on a visit to Manchester that he fell in love with the bright orange of Salford Van Hire! On returning to his bedsit in Leeds he changed his name to Andrew Van Hire..then Andrew Von Hire, then after much soul searching.. Andrew Elderberry. But, after a row with Craig Adams he changed it to a name Adams wouldn't be able say or spell..Eldritch. And thus history was made, and in time it was duplicated by the Nephilim and then Rosetta Stone :) ho ho. And if you don't believe me your all wrong!!! wahhhhhhh.

It comes from late 70s/early 80s Leeds speed freak dialect. As is well documented, the lads were and still are all big fans of Motorhead, and Lemmy is well known for 2 things: Nazi fetishism and amphetamines. A "von" therefore became popular slang for a few pills. Now, Eldritch was fairly infamous for a prodigious intake of these in his heyday, so naturally enough he became known as Andrew "the Von" Eldritch, which in time was shortened to just "Von".

This isn't even remotely true, I just made it all up.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.
