Just one more reason NOT to go to Whitby,along with the middle aged teachers and Quantity surveyers dressed as vampires,the s**t bands you've never heard of and every pub and club in the town having "Goth" nights that are actually EBM nights.

Genuine question - do you think that Goth culture is compatible with Christianity? Even if one doesn't strictly identify oneself as a goth.

Be interesting to know people's views on this... I tend strongly towards the belief that it's not (not due to any great constraints of the subculture but to the constraints of Christianity and indeed the other Abrahamic religions).

Earlier I may have been inclined to give an unquestioning yes, but for obvious reasons my religious ties have become ever more strained :urff:

I guess Goth culture is compatible with the more liberal denominations and, like everything else remotely interesting, is probably opposed to the more restrictive ones ;)

I subscribe to Motz' point of view, although I'd say there's a marginally greater faction of atheists/agnostics, followed by a fair number of 'alternative' religions, the pagan/wiccan/earth-based denominations, as well as a handful of Satanist types. Christianity is probably in the mix, but to no great amount.

Saw this circulating on livejournal. It's like a watermark of quality.

This "News" article really gets my back up, as I am a fervent anti-christian, and have bben for years!

After almost 20 years of being a *cough* "Goth" I am starting to have serious doubts about the whole genre and my place within it.

I do not normally "do" regret, but the times that are a changing.

Perhaps this topic deserves a thread of its own?
