hmmm, I'm also looking for any of the new shows, www.lak.co.za/sisters
Hi people,
if anybody's interested in 2003 shows, I can offer copies in good quality from stuttgart to Leeds 2, and in distorted/bad (but maybe improvable) quality from Amsterdam to Fürth, although without Berlin and Warsaw, Frankfurt and Zwickau distorted and without the encores.
...Er... yes, there are copies of Glasgow and Leipzig, too. G. in good quality, L. distorted, both complete.
...But.. I'm rather slow... So please be patient...
Knew you'd be pleased,
cu next time, Eva.

You naughty, naughty people, buying bootlegs is ILLEGAL and IMMORAL. Shame on you.
Gazza for England manager
Er... Although we sometimes have a particular passion for immoral things we neither buy nor sell bootlegs (not even bootleg shirts - we have standards!). But we share what we have with people who share what we don't have yet.
And they all lived happily ever after...
Amen.

Hello traders,
I'm desperate to find a boot of the recent Glasgow Barrowlands show. It was a top gig and I would love a little keepsake.
The only thing is I'm not really into trading. I have a good few Sisters bootlegs (mostly mp3s) but nothing that the serious traders wont already have. The stuff I have includes:
1985-03-09 Glasgow
Echoes (3 disc)
Enjoy the Puppet Show (CDR - not mp3 source)
M'era Luna Festival, Hildesheim, Germany 2000
Napalm Gods
Temple Of Rarities
Trans-Europe Excess (CDR - not mp3 source)
Ultra Rare Trax
The only other thing I could offer as a trade is a home made DVD-R consisting of Wake, Shot, and the promo videos for Black Planet and Walk Away.
Cheers.

Hi, I don't have anything to trade, but I'd really like a CD of the Bristol Academy show. Does anyone have a copy to sell or whatever?

Now some people have been trading the 2003 shows for a few weeks can someone say what's one of the best recordings. Sadly, the average recording from 1990 onwards is a lot worse than the average 1980's recording. It's probably cos the earlier gigs were in smaller halls with better acoustics (my Leeds bootleg sounds a bit crap, BUT it sounded crap when I was there.)

What are the London recordings that are floating about like ?
As regards to sound quality, alot of things have changed since then.
(Unfortunately) venues are getting smaller again so thats not the
only source of bad sounding tapes. More people are taping gigs
but using MiniDisc and bad mics and also not really knowing how to do
it. I was stood next to a girl on the 2nd Leeds date and she had a MD
in her bag and the mic not much above waist level. MD's don't always
produce bad tapes but they don't tend to be designed with live recording
in mind - many don't have backlights for level checking or the ability
to adjust levels while you're recording either - this feature alone produces
enough ruined tapes. I had a go with a Sony MD a few years ago when my DAT was out of action - what aload of crap it was. I'd pack in doing it
before using one of those again. I'm told Panasonic ones are more upto
the job.
The Sisters sound has changed over the years as well - its become more
industrial with more grungy low end and just the drums up at the top
and that doesn't help. I don't think their PA is upto the job either. It
can produce good sound if you're in the right place but its a bit weedy
so it doesn't cut out the persistant chatter that goes on unless you're
sat on top of it.
Plus I think the old sony walkman produced a better sounding tape than your average MD - the amplifiers were designed alot better, but it did
cost a hell of alot more.

The lack of backlighting on most MD recorders can be a pain, but a way round it is to use a lighter as a torch so you can see what you're doing...wayne wrote: MD's don't always

Yep the old Sony MD's (e.g. the MZR50) weren't really designed to record loud concerts - I swapped mine for a Sharp MDMT90 last year and I've gotten much better results with it than I ever got with the Sony and that's with the same mic. And you can adjust the level whilst recording which is a big advantage over my old Sony MD.

the advantage with the TCD-100, PCM-M1 models are that you can monitor the recording with the remote controll

It doesn't matter what you use to record. All that is important is what sort of microphone you use, and what recording levels you have set (and if you have automatic recording level even this isn't important.)
Most if not all of the 80's recordings of Sisters gigs were recorded on cassette, and on the whole are way better than any of the 90's recordings. This will be cos you'll always get better results in a small venue with good acoustics, as opposed to many of the newer venues that were never designed for live music and have horrible acoustics.

location is just as important as mics, getting somewhere where you
won't get josled or loads of talkers on the tape.
Automatic level recordings are the work of satan, agc circuitry can give
pulsing artifacts and for it to work well you have to be too far from the
sound source which means you're going to get chatter on the tape.
Autolevel recordings are usually muggy as there is quite a bit of limiting
of the signal happening before it hits the MD - you cannot beat manual
level recordings.
I don't think all 80's recordings are that great either - sure there are
some good ones - but there are some that should have been wiped
over asap, as well. True venues have got bigger and that plays a part but more people are doing it now so there are more recordings floating about - more are going to be bad. 'Back in the day' it was a more expensive hobby, less people did it and I think people knew alot more
about how to do it. I learnt my craft off a 60's/70's taper - they were an
inventive bunch. They also worked in teams people running the mics,
flipping tapes, keeping the average punter away from the equipment
- that doesn't happen anymore and it going to reflect in the quality of
tape produced. Audiences are different now - more of 'em and they're
rowdier. And the sisters sound worse than they did in the 80's - which
I suspect could be the main problem.
