What do you think of Still?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Ben said to me in Gothenburg that Andrew always is very nice to him, but that he doesn't -know- him. I don't think that's a bad thing, work-wise. I have often been in projects (which have nothing to do with music) where I have often wished I wouldn't know the other people involved so good ;-)

Ben also said he had the impression that Adam was the one blocking a new release..makes me think Andrew has told him The Way Things Are in the Sisters

I'm very thankful for two guitarists who spend an awful lot of time with the fans, they must really have a good idea what the fanbase thinks about the gigs and what they want the sisters to do.

Still waiting for Ben's song to show up, btw - maybe on the extra-dates in Brussels and Barcelona, or tomorrow in Ben's hometown? Wishful thinking but you never know.

Yeah, I think STILL was a great double album, the way it compelled all previously unreleased studio material with the band's last ever live per formance! And what a performance! Can you imagine the fan's shock when they played Isolation and Twenty Four Hours??!!
Then again the studio side was an awe inspiring wall of sonic!
It felt as though Exersize One Brooded its way into the vinly all the way to the most cruelly deceptive The Only Mistake (is that a dog bark or a guitar string rub at the begining??!!) which still left you with chronic tinitus long after the static had faded, the speakers blipped with the removal of the needle and the click from the final shutdown of the turntable!
Aaaaah yes, vinyl, my dear friend!

It needs another part somewhere near the middle and it'll easily be one of the best 'new' songs.

Some of the lurking mish-ooon fans who surface every now and then would be my bet. The same ones who have a post count of 7 and always knock the Sisters every time there's a new tour, then promptly disappear until the next one.

2 days later, it's still great!!!

Hey, I *almost* did! It reminded me of the first time I heard an MP3 of Slept, and couldn't understand a word or even follow the music. Wait a second--I think I could understand more of Slept on first hearing than I could of *this* song.

But I remembered the guitars were OK, and coupled with the fact that the song needs honing and perfecting, as others mentioned, I changed my vote.

I also have to take into account the fact that the real, live version probably sounded very different to this recording (for which I had to turn all the volume controls on my computer up to 100% to actually hear properly). I'm still trying to find a version of Top Nite Out that gives me the same crazed effect it does when you're front row hearing it live. Things just get lost in recordings.

Maybe that was why I wasn't so eager to download it! Still, many thanks to the person who originally uploaded the file. :notworthy:

The potential lyrics people are posting *are* rather disappointing, though. I know the newer lyrics often lack things the older stuff had, but they still carry a certain strangeness or mystery to them. I'm not getting that with this song, so far.

Erm, I think my main point, though, is you can't really judge a new song based on one "ok" live recording.

Still sounds like it has potential to me. Just that: potential. Nowhere near as excellent as Summer or Crash+Burn or even Susanne. But miles better than Slept... now that's turgid crap! Almost as bad as No Time To Cry. I think they'll work it out as the tour progresses, or at least I hope so. I'd love a better quality copy though... anyone do a mixing-desk recording of Glasgow then? ha ha.

I like it. It's a catchy song - would be a nice contribute to Eurovision Song Contest me thinks. ;)

Nah, seriously. It's great to hear that they still make good songs with or without Adam.

The chorus doesn't seem to come over very well live yet, but that is one top dogs-bollox rocking song. I give it ten.

just listened to Still for the first time. oooh, nice to hear a new sisters song again. and i'm pretty positive about it. riff & drums combination remind me of first and last and always crossed with amphetamine logic, with the current sisters edge to it. one of the best unreleased tracks for me. as said before: give it some time to evolve, and this can become a real fire cracker.

Pedestrian riffing, worn-out power chords, apparently bland lyrics. Miles better than "Slept", however, which says nothing. If this is the "new" Sisters, God have mercy on our souls. If this is an on-the-road hack job, I don't see the point.

Pretty much my thoughts I'm afraid to say. The Doktor sounds in fine form; and the guitars are actually pretty good, although there does need to be some more variety in the song I think.

It really suffers from the lack of a decent Bass; the synth bass sounds ok, but I think a human bassist would really elevate the instrumental to another level.

My main problem is Von himself, alas... it didn't seem like there was much effort put into actually singing it.

Perhaps I'm being too critical for the first performance; I think the bare bones of a good song are there, but it really needs a bit more work on it yet...[/b]

Ta 4 the link MOTZ

Im not sure, it sounds ok-ish for a dodgy live recording
ha ha so much for the digital age!
I think we should wait and see when a more polished version comes out before we make any hasty conclusions.
It is well known and documented that AE has always deliberatly set out to make the live shows sound different from the studio recording so I guess only time will tell with this one, lets just say the potential is there

BTW Im s**t-awful on bass so if thats whats missing put me in touch with him and Ill offer my services!! ha ha ha !!

Many's the great song spoiled by a crappy recording. The main thing here is that it's just so wonderful to hear something new after such a major upheaval in the ranks and after so long in the desert. As the first new song with the new boys, and when things were looking decidedly ropey for a long time, it's far far more than I reckon anyone ever could have expected.

"Igor!!! It liiiiiiivesssss!!!"

That about sums it up.
