I was on Dominion for about a year before I found here, there really is no comparison IMO.

true, and when they are i just kick 'em in the arsesultan2075 wrote:eotunun wrote:I even think that Heartlanders are better informed than the regular dominionites.. You don´t get here from the official homepage, so more people around here are rather die hard fans, even with some connections to behind the curtain. And Heartland looks incredibly much better!_emma_ wrote:And I suppose if anything interesting is ever posted there it gets reported here anyway.
And people here aren't prone to territorial pissing matches, generally.
its territory, and its up to me who pisses in it
oh now, look what you've done? you've made me sound like everything our darling annika makes me out to be for shame
seriously though, they're 2 different kettle of fish and serve 2 different functions. which is as it should be.
dominion has never been about "community building" - thats not its remit - and thus the kind of mindless/pointless waffle that happens here is very out of place. in addition, its easier to ignore trivial stuff here because you tend to know which areas of the forum are more prone to that kind of stuff (i hope!)
i guess dominion's role has changed as the web has evolved. you have to remember it began way back in the dawn of time when newsgroups and mailing lists were very specialised - it was quite pioneering in its way.
these days, with the plethora of "community" oriented sites (forums like HL, "groups" like myspace, LJ, etc etc etc), dominion's role is a more focused one that perhaps it used to be. people use it for different things. as a conduit for information it is without doubt a wonderful tool! its lean, fast and simple to use. where it fails (and this is in no way down to the list admin) is mainly due to the nature of the medium it uses. which is to say that once an email has "flown the coop" its very difficult to track what happens to it, and thus it becomes a nightmare to try to "moderate" - nigh on impossible, and i know -bat has tried various approaches at this when its kicked off - ranging from a complete "hands off, you're all grown ups" approach, to the other extreme of shutting the whole list when it got too out of hand.
the main problem is "keyboard warriors". we've all seen them - they are by no means exclusive to dominion - HL has its share (thankfully far less these days than used to be the case). they're reactionary, prone to jumping in on anything in the hope that it makes their sad existence a little less sad. and they are notoriously difficult to "contain". something that's made far worse when people "feed" them (guilty as charged, yer honour ).
i dont think its a question of being "die hard" - far from it! a good % of dominionites go waaaaay back
dominion serves a different purpose, and operates within in a different medium to HL. for some, that method suits better than HL's "message board" format - dominion's admin, -bat, included (see below).
when i first started HL it was as a reaction to the atmosphere that was around on dominion at the time. i felt there was a huge gap in the market (as it were) for something more community-driven.
i in no way set out for HL to compete for attention with dominion. it was supposed to be a complimentary service we offered. at the time i asked -bat if he wanted to help admin HL - he declined, with thanks, as the saying goes, citing free time and the fact that it would require constant WWW access (neither of which he had then)... to this day -bat and myself remain on good terms - we each know what our "sites" do, and their place in the world, and i believe both of us are adult enough, and secure enough in our relative merits to not feel threatened by any real or potential inter-site squabbles.
as mik f has just said in his dominion email, cross-pollination is always a good thing - it helps keep the whole thing alive, vibrant and interesting.
and i'll ban anyone who says different.
so there
