A couple of particularly nasty twelve hour coach journeys to and from Aberdeen and London and I'm back. But was it worth it? In a word - yes.
There was a good atmosphere from the off (although a lengthy wait of almost twenty-five minutes for the band to finally appear) with a fairly mixed crowd, which now seems the norm for Sisters' gigs in the UK.
It was a relatively safe crowd pleasing set, opening with a powerful salvo of Temple Love, Crash And Burn and Ribbons. A good performance on the whole, although IMO they totally killed When You Don't See Me - I didn't even recognise it until the chorus. Maybe it'll grow on me. I certainly wasn't too impressed by the revamped Anaconda back in '97, but it has grown of me and I reckoned it's improved with practice over the years.
There were welcome renditions of Alice and First And Last And Always and the UK premier of Slept. Other than that the gig seemed to feature a rather subdued and Eldritch, who appeared content to lurk behind the particularly dense smoke for most of the gig. Indeed, he didn't really come alive until the encores. He arrived back on stage and announced "Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, I'm really disappointed in thy government!" Perhaps this is why he's declared West Yorkshire a free state? Does Tony Blair know, and would he care? During I Was Wrong he also got hacked off with various cheering/cat calls and used the tried and tested "Shut the f**k up!" Apart from that he seemed relatively good natured. Lucretia seemed much improved on from last year, if the Bex bootleg is any indication and Top Nite Out was as powerful as ever. The gig was closed by Vision thing, with a few ad libs towards the end - a repeated refrain of "This war is wrong!" (no sh*t) and "It's counter productive."
The set list, in no exact order, was:
Temple of Love
Crash & Burn
Ribbons
When You Don't See Me
Flood I
Slept
Alice
Summer
Will I Dream?
Anaconda
Dominion/Mother Russia
Giving Ground
First & Last & Always
Romeo Down
Flood II
***
I Was Wrong
Neverland
Lucretia My Reflection
***
Top Nite Out
Vision Thing
Corrections to the usual address, please!
And did anyone catch what Eldritch muttered to the people in the balcony at the end?
