Censorship: The act of or system of censoring.
Censor: 1. one of two Roman Magistrates appointed to take the census, and, later, to supervise public morals. 2. An official with the power to examine publications, movies, television programs etc. and to remove or prohibit anything considered obscene, libelous, politically objectionable, etc.

Yes. This board is not "public property". It is maintained and paid for by Quiff Boy. As a moderating team, we tend to take a light hand on censoring other people's posts, as we feel like it makes HL a nicer place.
On the other hand, we reserve the right to come down, and if necessary, come down hard, on behaviour that is inimical to the usually friendly nature of HL.

Though minded to agree with the Voltaire statement of fighting to the death to defend anothers right to say what they wish even if I despise it, I do feel that perhaps some element of censorship is required on HL to prevent it from descending into a flame war or worse..
Surely if you want to have a heated exchange of views than it would be simple enough to do it via IM? After all, they're not censored, unless Herr Quiff and the rest are hellbent on taking after Big Brother..

tell me how we censor? go on, i challenge you.
ok, we * the work mission, coz its funny
we sometimes * swear words, so the site doesn’t trigger people's firewalls when they view it from at work
sometimes we have to lock and/or delete threads when they seem to be on the verge of breaking out into a fight
this is because we usually find that those "discussions" are self-perpetuating and only ever spiral downwards. once you stop a thread the feelings tend to evaporate and its back to business as usual.
you don't like it? go join another site, or a mailing list. like dominion. and see the s**t storm that that quite often descends into.
i run this forum. all the hosting and domain registrations are in my name. it didn’t just spring up out of nowhere. what happens here reflects on me, like it or not. and i refuse to have this place descend into the chaos that other message boards, mailing lists etc inevitably do.
to me, the fact that HL has been running as long as it has is testament to the "light but firm touch" the HL moderating team use. they are there, but they seldom intervene unless strictly necessary for the well-being of the forum.
its how we run it. you wont change that. so i suggest if it upsets you THAT much you go and join a different community.
danke.
and as i've said elsewhere, can we get back to behaving like reasonable people?
sheesh. this summer heat is getting to people isn't it?

The funny thing is, I didn't actually censor anything. I didn't edit anyone's posts to take out anything objectionable.

@ DarkAngel : your definition of censorship is biased.
I'm with you on this but it should be pointed that this quote is most certainly apocryphal : Voltaire never wrote or said this. Even if it's more or less consistent with his thinking.Doktor Gott wrote:Though minded to agree with the Voltaire statement of fighting to the death to defend anothers right to say what they wish even if I despise it, I do feel that perhaps some element of censorship is required on HL to prevent it from descending into a flame war or worse..

Problem is though, in the instance of a personal situation or disagreement between people on the board, it makes things very difficult for those who deal with things like this in an open and straighforward manner, and easier for those who create grief for others in a more insidious way.
That favours cowards, in my opinion.
In the instance of talking about the sisters, I've read many threads in Sisters chat where it seems that daring to criticise Von in particular in any way is pounced upon by so many people that a mod eventually has to wade in, which is pretty depressing.

Me thinks it stems from a heated debate on another Thread-it's been trashedemilystrange wrote:where did all this come from? did i miss something?
The trouble with posting is that often a person can be misconstrued or their intentions ill defined-also it was getting a wee bit out of hand (understatement)
I've seen worse on D*m***on and there are people (person) who should be barred from ever touching a keyboard on that.
We all need a guiding hand if its to stay loved up, it's not exactly 1984

In the main I think this forum is pretty much self-moderating, in that 99% of its members know what the 'flavour' of it is and play within the rules. This is all due to they way the Boss started things.

Mmmh, one avatar on this page is forbidden in my country. You may or may not like it, but viewing a page with a swastika on can bring you in serious troubles in Germany.

@ 9w9 - now you're taking the p*ss. i know what you're doing with your latest avatar, and frankly i dont care. i WILL rise to the bait and i will be removing your avatar very soon. its in exceedingly poor taste, and as a former member of the ANL i take particular exception to it. i can only assume you dont quite realise the poor judgement you've exhibited on that one.
this is getting ridiculous now.

I trashed it.
The posting behaviour I warned about (with an explicit threat of trashing the thread) continued.

if it's going to be locked anyway, trashing is just easier, shows that somethings just aren't gonna be allowed to go on. plus, he can, it's his board, and he's right 99.9999999999999999999999999% of the time.
