Should there Be Censorship on Heartland?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

thank you.

thats the point we're missing from this poll isn't it?

whilst the question is "should there be or shouldn't there be?", what DA is alluding to (and what everyone knows she is alluding to) is that there *is* censorship here.
You are right that I think that taking down the thread was censorship. When you corrected me and told me it is moderation I can accept that. My question remains - when does moderation become censorship - or what is the difference between the two? It seems to me that "the higher good" can be a motive for both. Also, it is my guess that you personally oppose censorship - so wouldn't this be a good question to ask?

And, just so you know where I stand - I enjoy Heartland - immensely. I am fascinated by our many differences. I hope you don't ask me to leave simply because I am asking some challenging questions.

i'm glad you enjoy it - believe it or not thats the point

i didnt as you to leave, i merely suggested that if you were unhappy with it you may be best seeking entertainment elsewhere.

and yes, i personally oppose censorship, by and large, but as someone who runs a publicly accessible message board where anyone can post anything, and that reflects on me, i can see that it also has its applications.

as for "when does moderation become censorship", i cannot answer that. the boundaries vary wildly from case to case, and a lot of it has to do with personal motives/agendas.

yes, "the higher good" can be a motive for both. but as with anything in the real world, its not that simple and there are thousands of subtle factors and nuances that also come into it - far too many to begin thinking about.

in short, it's a very grey area.

and at the end of the day lets get this into perspective. this is only a message board, so anything we choose to moderate or censor isn't really the end of the world is it?

when you're trying to moderate, and thus promote harmony, its not censorship. when you are trying to prevent a certain piece of information, an idea, or whatever, from being discussed, its censorship.

i never tried to stop the notion being out there, i merely thought that the thread in question was going nowhere constructive and thus sought its cessation, on the basis that these things usually peter out when people have had a chance to step away from the keyboard, take a deep breath, and gather their thoughts.

Yeah. We do what we feel is right so long as it keeps offense to a minimum. If the mods don't like it, it's well within their rights to edit, lock or trash the thread. If Quiffy doesn't like someone, it's within his rights to do the same, or to delete/ban the offending person.
We're just renting our space on his server, our presence on Heartland is not a right. And if Quiffy decides someone has outstayed their welcome, he is allowed to kick them out.
End of.

Just read the 'offending' thread, and while I agree that 9while9 and Motz are entiteled to their opinions, others will disagree with them.
Motz' 'Only if it has a cock' comment was abit near the knuckle,
the puking emoticon was (in my opinion) a light hearted way of saying
'Too Much Information', it should've been left at that, but no, over-reaction and accusations of homophobia start flying.
I could'nt give a damn if someone is straight or gay, that's your choice, but don't go ramming it down our throats.
Just my opinion but, Some people on this forum are waaaaaay to sensitive.

And just as I thought things were calming down.

I wasn't forcing anything upon anyone. It was far less information than the pictures of tits that get posted daily.

Differing opinions are welcome, slanderous bullsh*t is not. Thank you for kicking a sleeping dog in the bollocks.

How was the puking emoticon slanderous s**t? He was merely stating his opinion that he found it gross.

I’ve rarely seen differing opinions on sexuality being welcome, it always ends with people yelling. I know this due to the arguments between two of my friends I used to have to endure daily on the school bus (one was homosexual, the other homophobic).

To clarify, the slanderous bullsh*t was referring to Mr Christ's blatant misrepresentation of the situation, nothing else.

1, I was not being slanderous. (BTW, slander is spoken, libelous is written.)
2, I was'nt accusing you personly of 'forcing anything on anyone'.

4, I sir, will not f**k right off, as I am not offended by your libelous remarks.

I think Julian Cope (and I'm sure Ness will back me up on this) said it better on Wilder - ... and then the Fighting Takes Over

Perhaps 'Ain't But The One Way' is the way to go?

Fascists are all I see
One too many Buttfuckers controlling me
But Suicide or Vigilante
To up the ante - Which is my way?

Ain't but the One Way
Ain't but the One Way
Ain't but the One Way... (gunshot)
To be free

Step into view... and about time
Make yourself some enemies + step out of line
We need a deadly assassin
And we need to do it today
'Cause the greed inside the Greedheads ain't ever gonna go away...

Grab yourself some friends, man
And grab yourself a good plan
And get yourself a hitman
And work out a time span
And aim for the Headman... Then lie low

light the blue touch paper then retire
