good lord

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Skeletal Family were leaders of the Bradford Goth contingent, with a distinctive lead vocalist in the shape of Anne-Marie, who later fronted Ghost Dance.

Not just one but two Cradle Of Filth tracks? :urff:
God they were s**t at Donington!
And labelling Front 242 and The Furs as goth is really stretching it.

Front 242 and the Furs are at least beloved of many goffix (not that I know about goffix of course, not being one! :innocent: :P   )

But how they managed to make that leap to COF I do not know. Fer fcuks sake, even Black Metal won't 'ave 'em! (sorry Libs)

Had a look.

Couldn't be arsed either.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

Quiffy is this fact: > Sunglasses After Dark, from Hatch End in Middlesex and named after the Dwight Pullen rock ‘n’ roll classic, were a halfway house between Goth and that other disobedient musical subgenre of the early 80s, psychobilly. Salvation originally formed in 1983, and started out as roadies for the Sisters Of Mercy. This is their rendering of Donovan’s classic ‘Sunshine Superman’.
:?:

Never heard of these guys > The Wake are not the Manchester Factory band but an entity from Columbus Ohio, active from the mid-90s onwards, who have been frequently cited as the Mid West’s answer to the Sisters Of Mercy.

Sorry for putting this thread back on the rails but....

....in summation, QB, I thought is was a fairly reasonable, some sweeping generalisations, and about 6 references to the Sisters, despite no Sisters tracks being found on the album. :?
The term Gothic subsequently prevailed in the early 80s as shorthand for a strand of post-punk music that occupied itself with themes of horror and damnation, mysticism and the supernatural
It's this quote at the beginning that sets it on the wrong footing before it's really begun, and probably only applies to 2 or 3 tracks. :urff:

Basically, the rest of the artical mentions each band and gives a sentence about where they came from and what their main influences are/were. Pretty straight forward. :)

I've read a lot worse.
I've got a mind like a poisonous fish...

Anything with more than fifty perecent accuracy gets a thumbs up from me. Might be a good album to start a newcomer on? Hence the CoF reference?

I don't quite understand why the Sisters aren't on it. They can bitch all they want about the tag, but there's no defying the influence.

So. A tentative approval from Heartlanders ultraharsh critic division...?

Most likely, they didnt give their permission for being on it, as it being a goth compilation.

Because this compilation album sucks. No Dead can dance, no Cocteau twins, no Sissies, no The Cure, no Rozz Williams Christian Death, no Mephisto Waltz, very poor FotN selection, no Bauhaus... And not a trace of dark-folk.
I'm not saying these bands are goth, but if they want to give an idea of what was then called goth, they just miss the point a whole lot.
If there's Front 242, where's Skinny Puppy ? Ministry ? Frontline assembly ? Nine inch nails ?
And what the funk is Nico doing here ? Sure she was a big influence, but then why no Velvet Underground, no Bowie, no Pink Floyd...
It sucks because, like most goth compilations, it gives far too much substance to what never really was a "genre".

The sleeve notes appear to be claiming that the Sisters were a Batcave Band FFS!

the reason why there is no *insert you fave band* on it is because if you peer closely enough you will realise its a cherry red compilation, and is (barring 1 or 2 exceptions) compiled from theirs and jungle's back catalogues ;)

and yes claire, i got to hear about it through my salvation contact, who obviously got to hear about because cherry red give them money (about 27p) to have their songs on the cd ;)

and yes 9, all that you read about salvation is true. mostly. dont know much about SaD though :?

:D

Good Grief, so there you go. Thanks for the insider info, Quiffy, I stand corrected.

OK, so it doesn't really work - but I'm still far more impressed than some of the drivel we've all seen scraped together in the deceased-equine name of Goff. Could be a good first taster, encourage people to explore and find the better bands?
