yeah, there should be some roots before Joy Division
what can you remember?
the first Russian goth - Mikhail Boyarsky
he's most famous for playing D'Artagnan role in "Three Musketeers" movie and he's also a pop-rock singer
some of his songs are a bit gothic
maybe, these:
Everything passes
The humpback
Green-eyed taxi
mention that he looked as Eldritch before Eldritch
and they both posess the unique voice
which pre-80s goths can you mention?
goffs origins

You take it backwards : music-wise, 80s goffs were inspired by things that were not goffic.ormfdmrush wrote: which pre-80s goths can you mention?

Lou Reed
Velvet Underground
Suicide
The Stooges

It all started with the blues. As did everything else.
Even earlier than that, there was this sound called the Big Bang. And every piece of good music since has been trying to get back to that point.

IIRC I read somewhere (thinking early 90s, around the release of Vision Thing) that Goff was one of the few forms of music that couldn't be traced back to blues. The thinking went that it wasn't a choon as such, but more akin to poetry.boudicca wrote:It all started with the blues. As did everything else.

Jocko Pervo does us proud
Bowie can certainly be blamed for a lot of ealy Goth, but I think it's all Thatchers fault-she made the kids miserable!

pre 80's goths?...ormfdmrush wrote:which pre-80s goths can you mention?
some folks will disagree...that's OK...i used to think differently too
1. Siouxsie & The Banshees
2. The Damned
3. The Cure
4. Bauhaus
5. Killing Joke (again debatable upon then being Goth)
post 1980 goth bands are far more elusive

PRE Goth FFS!...that means before as IIRC it was released in 1979...Badlander wrote:Are you calling Three imaginary boys, their one and only pre-80s record, a goff album ?Burn wrote: 3. The Cure
all the bands i listed had at least one release before 1980 and they all had a major infulence on the sound and feeling of the music that was later termed GOTH by Ian Astbury
