Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.
yeah, there should be some roots before Joy Division
what can you remember?
the first Russian goth - Mikhail Boyarsky
he's most famous for playing D'Artagnan role in "Three Musketeers" movie and he's also a pop-rock singer
some of his songs are a bit gothic
maybe, these: Everything passes The humpback Green-eyed taxi
mention that he looked as Eldritch before Eldritch
and they both posess the unique voice

which pre-80s goths can you mention?
You take it backwards : music-wise, 80s goffs were inspired by things that were not goffic.
David Bowie
Lou Reed
Velvet Underground
Suicide
The Stooges
glam rock
punk rock
And so on and so forth...
I'd end this moment to be with you
Through morphic oceans I'd lay here with you

IIRC I read somewhere (thinking early 90s, around the release of Vision Thing) that Goff was one of the few forms of music that couldn't be traced back to blues. The thinking went that it wasn't a choon as such, but more akin to poetry.

Are you calling Three imaginary boys, their one and only pre-80s record, a goff album ?
PRE Goth FFS!...that means before as IIRC it was released in 1979...
all the bands i listed had at least one release before 1980 and they all had a major infulence on the sound and feeling of the music that was later termed GOTH by Ian Astbury
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
