Huntly.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

That's the factor that astounds me. I read about Peter 'Sutty' Sutcliffes penthouse. He has access to everything. Internet, whicever DVD's, books, CD's he desires. WTF? It just makes no sense at all.

The average cost to keep a prisoner is apparently 38k per year. Scary. :urff:
Exactly.

Sutcliffe even has his own little garden & Sky TV. That's punishment for slaying women?!?
Its an absolute disgrace.

This country is ridiculous full stop though really isn't it. Young offenders getting taken on 2 week holidays for doing something wrong, political correctness gone mad etc etc.

"Those who fight monsters should be careful not to turn into monsters" or something like that.

Now, let's go and string up that PAEDOPHILE by his balls, smash his teeth out, chop off his nipples, and p*ss in his face.

To be frank, I don't know.

I certainly wouldn't like to be permanently incarcerated in Broadmoor (which is where Sutcliffe is I believe.)

Broadmoor is actually a hospital, not a prison; this may explain the treatment that Sutcliffe receives. As I understand the matter, although at trial he was not found to be legally insane, he has since been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Not that this excuses his crimes of course, but it may go some way towards explaining them.

On a larger scale, I'm pretty much at a loss when it comes to the question of "what to do with criminals". The fact that a large proportion of released prisoners carry on committing crimes demonstrates (to me at least) that the alleged deterrent effect of prison simply doesn't deter crime.

For more serious crimes, I have a knee-jerk reaction against the death penalty: tit-for-tat retribution just looks like revenge rather than "justice" to me. And of course the morality of the state killing someone is questionable at best.

But then again, locking someone up for the rest of their life is possibly a worse thing to do to someone than killing them.

In summary, prison doesn't work, execution's a no-no IMO. I'm stumped.

Not when it comes to scum like Huntly, and certainly not when I'm also a parent. I don't think your philiosophy books will change that..... :urff:

Let’s say you have two children and you find out there’s a convicted paedophile in your neighbourhood. You find out and you and some other families are suspicious of his activities; so, convinced by fear that he’s fiddling again you decide to teach that ‘bastard’ a lesson and, acting alone and in the process of giving him his lesson, you accidentally kill him.

What do you think will happen? You’ll have a person’s death on your conscious, and you’ll be slammed in jail or quite possibly have a very large fine that doesn’t only affect you; it affects your children too. It’s not his fault either, it’s yours for how you chose to react.

You shouldn’t let your emotions run wild.

Easier said than done. During the big media shît-storm over paedophilia, wasn't a paediatrician attacked?

Be that as it may, it's an emotive issue. Most people are understandably, and quite rightly, protective of children.

I also have problems with the death penalty.

No-one has the right to kill another human being. The Law doesn't change that IMO. It's one of the rare times I follow the Christian belief ;)

On the other hand, if someone does any harm to my wife or children (to be), let's just hope he ain't around anymore when I arrive, because I will beat him until I hear the pleasing sound of my knuckles cracking against the wall behind his face...

A lifetime sentence could be an option, but I never understood the 'release him after ten years' policy...

I'll have to take your word for that since I'm never having children; I’m a consciously selfish person, and I don’t think they make very good parents; also, I don't think it'd be right for me to forcefully bringing another being into this world without its consent and I'd be adding another human or two to humanity, which is something I detest immensely... er...

Let us all step back and examine what we have written...

OK, better now?

it is so simple, except for non viewers of Not the 9 o'clock News, back in the 70s

Castration doesn't work. Modern day* paedophilia is not about sex, it's about power. They do it for the feeling of having control.

*I read somewhere about some ancient civilastions where sexual intercourse between men and young boys was naturally and commonly openly practiced. Whereas I find this somewhat disturbing, back then it was the norm.

The same book also talked about a civilisation where they squished the heads of babies to elongate their heads, making them look like the gods they worshipped.

You're obviously not speaking from experience (I hope) but no doubt one of your many fascinating books.

The problem as I see it with irreversible "treatments" like castration is -- well, that they're irreversible.

A hypothetical: a man is accused and convicted of raping a 7-year old girl, and is castrated as punishment / treatment. 9 months later, evidence surfaces that shows his conviction was in error; he never touched the girl in question. How are you going to sew his bollocks back on?

They have false teeth, false boobs, false legs... I don't see the problem. ;D

AND it is still easier than resurrecting an innocent man after a death penalty.

Now, on a serious note...

You see, the Law is all but infallable, of course. A lot of people have been put to death while innocent. A lot are imprisoned for life for something they did not do.
People have died because doctors diagnosed them wrong.
Whole trains, planes and boats crashed and sunk because of one human being going 'oops'.

'Due to human error' is a saying that is so true. We are mere humans, we make mistakes. The law-abiding ones as well as the law-breaking ones.

But, in my opinion, that does not give the law-breaking ones the right to just do their crimes, put them away for a couple of years and then release them with a "don't ya do it again, now, kiddo".

When I was lil' Iz, I was punished for things I did wrong. When I came home too late, I was punished by house arrest for the next weekend. When I stole a cookie, I got a slap on the buttocks or the head and sent to my room without music or TV (the horror! no music!).

I became a better person because I was taught the difference between right and wrong.
NOT by a hard upbringing with a daily dose of beatings, but also NOT by a too lenient upbringing where all you do is praise the kid when he does something good and never say something when he does something bad (the 'modern' upbringing, so to say).
My parents found the golden way between 'tough' raising and 'too soft' raising of children.

The people who rape young children ... *counting on the Severity Scale where 'coming home too late' equals 1 weekend imprisoned with LESS than the average prisoner today, to whit no TV or radio...*

... well, sorry. 25 years seems nice to begin with. Or put them in a psy clinic.
