please let me Hi-Jack this thread because tonight I am really sad
Some of you know I have trouble at work. Then I got ill.
When I returned to work, I asked my my colleague/mate Yoon, to stand in my defence. He declined.
He was sacked earlier this year.
Turns out, The Union is going to fight his case and he asked me to be a witness.
Another (by now ex) colleague has already turned him down.
I said I would speak to The Union, then get back to him.
He kept pushing me and wanting a yes or no, I kept saying, let me speak to The Union.
Result = f**k Off! and a phone hung up
I have to watch my nads, he didn't support me when I asked.
I let him hang out to dry tonight,
Should I feel bad?

I think in these circumstances it would be very easy to tell him to go f*ck himself, and be ok with that.
but...
speaking from a peacemaker perspective (that's Gandhi, not Colt, btw)...you remember what it felt like when he wouldn't stand up for you? How bad you felt? Yoon was watching his nads too. IMHO you would be the bigger man for saying that you would stand up for him. If Yoon is your mate, you should be a witness - the union works best when we stand together. Is it worth losing a friend over?

James - it sounds like you did more than a lot of people would have done in the first place in just remaining on talking terms with him. I don't think you have anything to feel guilty about - if you'd have known he was on your side you would have been right there. We all know that. And if you ever need a character witness there's god knows how many people on here who'd vouch for you, including me.

For what little consolation it's worth, I had a similar almost 4 years back which ended up causing havoc in my personal life and making me seriously ill. I got fortunate that the person making the trouble was a compulsive liar.
I can't give you an absolute answer. The best I can say is that right now the most important thing is your own personal well-being, mental as well as physical. These things can mess with your mind if you bottle them up and brood over them.
What I would do is talk to the union anyway, see what the story is, then get back to the other person if it's appropriate to do so. He may not have been the happiest person in the world when he reacted like that, and anyway 2 wrongs don't make a right, no matter how p!ssed you may be with him over your own thing.
That might not be the best thing in this particular situation, but one thing I've learned is that if you start out positive then positive will follow. It may take it's time but it will follow.

I'll check out what the Union have to say and if I feel there's a chance, I'll do the right thing. Problem is I know how loaded the bases are, the Council have already ridden rough shod all over him twice.
