Acer AT3705-DTV 37 inch LCD TV..I've seen it on sale for A$2600 inc tax. (1078 quid)
mainly because
(1) I have no tv, and i do have a pc with dvi output + a digital HD tv card
(2) we get HD + SD digital tv free to air in australia
(3) the technology is changing so fast, that paying $4200 for a $40" inch
samsung seems a waste of money.
(4) this'll tide me over for 3-5 years.
(5) I can use my pc as a tv hard disk scheduler/recorder
Any comments or alternative suggestions?
the response time of this screen is 12ms.
I'm thinking of getting one of these....

Depends on what you want to watch really.
If you are into fast moving movies etc., then this may not be the one you want, as you will get some picture "smearing".
LCD is coming on in leaps & bounds, but it isn't always as good as CRT.
There are some corkers out there, however.
Have a look at Panasonic, Toshiba & the Bravia stuff from Sony.
DVi is okay, but if you have HDMI connection, that is a heck of a lot better.
Of course, the ultimate is to splash out on a projector & screen along with some sort of receiver. But then you are looking at lots of money if you want to have something decent.
Ultimately, if you like the Acer, then buy it, but my advie is that you at least try the others if you can. & don't let the salespeople feed you a line. They are there to sell (crap or no crap).
Try them with something you are familiar with. Usually, I use the asteroid chase from attack of the clones, The tatooine scenes from the last hope (when R2 & 3PO first arrive) & always good to try something with a lot of red (Shrek dragon scene??)
Turn brighteness to 30% & contrast to 60% & take a look. Do the people look real, or are they horribly orange, like an airline hostess?
Oh & turn off all the "artificial intelligence" on the telly, as that usually horses up the performance.

I use a 20" LCD ACER montior for gaming in HD and watching DVDs it's got a 8/ms response time and you can pick one up for $200 - $300 CDN.
Granted it's not a big as I'd like it to be, but I just can't justify spending all that cash for a TV.
Only thing I've been impressed by in HD is sports. Movies well you're not going to notice anything at least not anything made prior to 2004.

End of line.
