Where's QB?Petseri wrote:We seem to be running about 10:1 spammers:legitimate users registering here. Just look at the most recent usernames. I suspect that there will be more space in the database in the near future.
On that note, I am off to empty to trash.
Maybe you Mods should shut the place down overnight and give the system a reboot or something
QB apparently needed a thread entitled Valentine, but he knows that it (like Santa Claus) never appears when he is here watching.Big Si wrote:Where's QB?Petseri wrote:We seem to be running about 10:1 spammers:legitimate users registering here. The spammers are getting out of hand. Presumably QB will upgrade the registration when he gets back, but I too was under the impression that we were using the registration method described by Big Si above.
Shut the place down? Unthinkable.

You could take the very nasty tactic that I implemented on my Computer Security forum of residence. Post all spammer IPs and emails in a big global sticky disclaiming any responsibility for what happens to them as a result of said policy

I think you have to put something about that in the disclaimer they have to read through before subscribing before you can do that. Read that on another forum I subscribed to and seems a good idea to me (can also be used against people abusing the weeding section)Motz wrote:You could take the very nasty tactic that I implemented on my Computer Security forum of residence. I am all for letting out information of bad reweeders. No surprises there.Obviousman wrote:I think you have to put something about that in the disclaimer they have to read through before subscribing before you can do that. For spammers, though, does it work? How much of a deterent is it? I would think that many use false email addresses (in as much as the accounts are used only to register, but for naught else). Does listing spammers' IPs really hurt them?

I think most IPs are dynamic anyway, so it'll hardly have any effects, guess we'd have to see at the general picture more. Adding that clause will only do us good, I thinkPetseri wrote:I am all for letting out information of bad reweeders. No surprises there.

They're probably faked as well.Petseri wrote:Does listing spammers' IPs really hurt them?
How about entering a garbled sequence of letters from a displayed image file as a confirmation for registration, and maybe even as a "probationary" tactic for the first 5 emails of new members?
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

As for the second part, do you mean the confirmation as Big Si described on the first page of this thread?
Yup, that's pretty much it.Petseri wrote:Thta is what I was wondering.mh wrote:They're probably faked as well.Petseri wrote:Does listing spammers' IPs really hurt them?

I think a "probation" for the first 5 posts might also work well. It won't annoy new members too much (might even encourage them to post a bit more at the start!) but should kill off the bots which only ever post once anyway.

I wouldn't be here if there was "probation" and you really wouldn't want that, now would you?
