Hi wondered if anyone can help me on this one.

Basically not really been in the goth scene properly for about 8 or so years after hearing so many god awful bands.

Could anyone recommend any decent tunes/albums from late 90s onwards?

I liked the first Manuskript and This Burning Effigy albums but didn't really go for their later albums and since then I've generally not known whats going on, and the stuff that I did hear seems rubbish and cheesy! Oh, and Rosetta Stone were good too.

Any helpers from goths and non-goths alike??

Are you ready? Lets begin.

Rosetta Stone were ace. But you know this.

Did you know that Carl North took his bass else where and formed the Dream Disciples? Churned out some rubbish, but eventually produced the album 'Asphysxia' which is packed full of very fine songs indeed. 'Room 57' being a standout track.

London after Midnight are a brillient take on the goth sound, Sean adopting the Eldritch 'we're not goths' attitude whilst being the gothest of them all. THE 90's goth rock album is Pscho Magnet, although there other full length release is worth it for the song 'you're best nightmare'.

Inkubus Sukubus are female fronted goth rock (as opposed to metal), they like to sing about how pagan they are. They have a die hard following, but I would recomend the album 'Belladonna and Aconite' listen to the title track for an idea of the sound.

The Manuskript song 'No Reprise' from the album natural high is one of the best tunes in my collection. Its pure poppy perfection.

Star Industry are FABULAS. There song 'nighties' has become a club classic and sure fire dancefloor filler. But the album you need to own is velvet. Well written and well produced this is an amazing album from a small band. They sound like the like the sisters, but go against all trends and have an origonal sound inspired by, but not copied off, the girls Downside: very hard to get hold of.

I'm just getting into the Cruxshadows. Some say artful and lovely, others say wishy washy and poo. I like it. Listen to the song 'winterborn'. Its basically synthpoppy goth.

Post Millenium.

The 2 bands that are beginning to emerge but still reside in obscurity that I would recomend are:

Rome Burns. Still on the club circuit, but getting small scale attention, the latest album 'non specific ghost stories' is worth a spin.

Uninvited Guest. they are working bloody hard to get noticed, and they are doing so quite well. There only album so far is excellent musically speaking, without the inane lyrics about vampires that one might expect. The lead singers hatred of religion comes through, but is nicely offset with more tongue in cheek numbers like the wonderful 'devils toybox'.

Thats my tuppence worth.

I believe one of them formed Intra-venus , Who are OK in a sort of bit more bleepy techno kind of way to Suspiria(Susperia being a f**king awful death metal band,believe me put the wrong spelling into a search and you'll get a nasty suprise).But you're right Suspiria were ace.

If its a Trad goth sound you're after,I'm afraid you have to go abroad and suffer from cringeworthy english-as-a-second-language lyrics.Worth checking out;

But only in small doses as they do have a tendancy to grate after a while(There is only a certain amount of Eldritch wannabes the mind can take).

On the Brit front Chidren on stun were pretty decent and Rhombus are rather splendid( Ed) if you can get anything by them.I'll second the Dream disciples,"Asphyxia" is a magnificent album that everyone should own(Didn't know about the Rosetta Stone connection),Also you might like to try Tin Omen and Tapping the vein if female fronted goth is your thing.

The Dreamies formed in around 1990, Karl joined around the year 2000, they were originally more of a prog rock band and were signed to Fish Of Marillions label, but later on diched the drummer and bass player and went the goth techno route.

The Horatii were good at the time, Roo has a new band and refuses to add goths to his myspace page, make of that what you will.

There are many 80s goth bands that have reformed and are on the circuit, but there are not that many form the 90s still going.

The Most prolific are the Inkies, Manuskript, and that band what they called? Oh I know All Living Fear

Nah, that track gets played everywhere. And the rest of their stuff is worth listening to too.

I avoided mentioning nosferatu, i just couldn't bring myself to put them forward as a good goth band (although I do own their 'legend' collection).

Nosferatu have really upped there game is the last 2 years, thety released a single last year, a cover of a ramones song, but they made a superb job of it.

Well, I think they start to bore you after listening to them a few times..
As most goth bands. Unfortunately so, as the sound of classic goth rock is some of the nicest modern music has to offer. Garden Of Delight have a nice sound, but some weak songs and depressingly daft lyrics.

Tell me more, I'm curious as to your dealing with them...

I used to follow rosetta paticually in the latter years both porl and karl are very good mates, I was even asked to join the band once. Ive also known the dreamies a long while, and personally preffered them with stepen and scott in there prog rock/goth style, but the went there own way, though I will alyways prefer veil of tears and in amber to the later stuff.

But when Karl joined, admittedly not soo much by the band but promoters started banding around the ex rosetta thing, and I saw that a wrong, especally for the dreamies who had spen the previous 10 years gigging there arses off only to be takked with the Ex another band label.

I always feel a band should be judged on there own merit and not by being Ex something else. Thats one of the reasons I didnt join rosetta as I wanted to do my own thing.

Rosetta gigs though were SOOOOOOOO Much fun though.

As Allfear said, Karl was a late addition to Dream Disciples, and their best stuff appeared long before they signed up with Fish IMHO - their early fan club tapes are by far the best stuff they ever did - lots of raw bleak emotions and anger and a very cool Hardware-fixation, without the 'gother than thou' pretentiousness which was a sad feature of alot of early 90s brit-goth (Redemption, Restoration, Die Laughing, etc). Their best ever song? the original version of Sundance - it had much harsher lyrics to the final version

'we dream of imperial children, we dream, we dream...ash in the sky, ashen grey, body bags, and broken glass, children torn in two... imperial children....'

They lost their edge and became sanitised when they signed up to Dick Bros and had a bit of a rawk phase (In Amber, etc) before rediscovering electro-goth with Sub-atomic, etc. Still, a f**king good band, although their earliest stuff was their best, sigh, isn't that always the way huh Sisters fans?!?!

I dont think Rosetta will ever appear again, Porl is doing new stuff under the name Miserylab he has a website www.miseraylab.com

In some ways, I d like ot remember bands like Rosetta and the Marionettes as they were, not saying that they would, but if the did reform id not want to see them playing to a half empty camden underworld or a pub tour like what so many other reformed bands have done, like the last few times ive seen Spear of Destiny for instance.

Eh. I went off Type O after their last studio album. f**king awful. Especially "I like girls". Petey ought to collaborate with some Jamaican artists, he seems to have the same mentality..
Inkubus Sukkubus are cool. If you've ever wondered what Stevie Nicks would sound like if she went Goth. They don't have any bad sngs as such, but they do tend to blend in to each other..
