The Merry Thoughts

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Hello everyone! My first post here.
I was doing some "reseach" over the internet on some goth bands, recently on THE MERRY THOUGHTS which I only recently started listening to. Got their two albums already, and now I was just looking up some facts as I'm working on a biography for www.rockdetector.com where I contribute as a reporter/writer. Naturally the subject of SISTERS can't be avoided when mentioning THE MERRY THOUGHTS, so I thought I would ask you all if you had some interesting info, facts or news on this matter?

Hello and Welcome. Image

I can't really help you with your question but if you hang around long enough, I'm sure someone will.

about TMT - I don't hate them as some people do. not original but rather good music.
but one night I had really lot of fun when I was wasting my time in msn and someone sent me several photos of TMT.
for example:

Yes, not only do the two bands sound alike, the singers look alike too! Well, the Sisters came first, cred to them, but I find the music of THE MERRY THOUGHTS to be quite good too.

I have never said their music was bad.
what makes me laugh - the point isn't in natural similarity of 2 persons (if we could find it) - the first photo (for example) looks damn similar to one Sisters photo (which I have in my PC and I could upload it - but I think it could be uploaded here already). the clothes, surroundings etc.
well, no compare Floodland inner sleeve and the one of Psychocult... band members' list, for example...

Have these tMt records, too (bought them used and cheap via amazon z-shops) :innocent:

The tMt mastermind did not just copy the sisters look or sisters sound - he even grab some very sisters like lyric phrases to make the thing finally sisters like...

Anyway, tracks like "we love to" are pretty audible.

I think the second Merry Thoughts album is class..... Low Violet is a brilliant track (although it has always reminded me of Heartland) Of course they sound and look like the Sisters, but they do have some great tunes, and are by far the best band out of all the Goth/Sisters clone groups (Star Industry- Iron Dust Crush comes close!)
Merry Thoughts have gone quiet over the last few years, but there is still more chance of a new cd from them methinks than the Sisters.....which is a shame.

I haven't been too updated on the SISTERS lately thus my dumb question to all you "experts" out there: Why? Last I heard there were some serious problems/fights between the SISTERS and their label. Has that been the reason for them not releasing any new material? :?:

As for THE MERRY THOUGHTS, I was very pleased actually when I heard them the first time on a compilation, and later bought the albums. Guess if you like the music of the SISTERS and you're hungry for more and the SISTERS don't release any new material, someone's gotta do it? At least they do it good. Most people who I've shown the music of TMT are almost amazed at the similarity. They don't sound close to the SISTERS, they sound exactly like 'em. Could even fool some (non-expert) fan into believing it's an old lost SISTERS album. They must have recieved a lot of s**t from people over they years for "copying" the SISTERS

By the way... did you guys know that TMT claim to be formed 83/84, and having the TMT name since about 1986? Back then they claim to have been more of a syntheziserband compared to Depeche Mode.

they have a few good riffs but their songs suffer from p*ss-weak production (especially guitars & drum sounds) and god awful lyrics (bad cod-english cliches abound!)

and he just grumbles in a von-like way. his voice has none of the feeling or power of eldritch and he cant actually sing - he's trying too hard to sound like that to actually inject any energy or dynamicism into his vocals. they sound stunted and too self-conscious :|

Well, I don't quite agree with that, but after all, this is a SISTERS forum, isn't it? :? I think it's pretty good anyway, but as for the production (not that I'm complaining) but the band never did have the full budget or backing of the labels to fully produce a proper album. As a matter of fact, they were ripped off back in 1995 and had no money when making "Psychocult". The music industry is hard. :(

For those of you who haven't heard any TMT, here is a sample from their "We Love To" song: http://www.spv.de/SoundsE/6/61392~0001005.mp3

i bought psychocult a few years ago after hearing them mentioned on dominion, and i thought the whole thing sounded a bit flat, and very "compressed"

i then downloaded a few other tracks to see if they were any better.... but they werent :|

but yes, as you say, its a sisters forum, so expecting everyone here to like tmt is pushing it a bit  ;D

Ummm. I never even knew that there's such a one-to-one copy of TSOM existing. Sometimes ignorance is a bliss.

can anyone tell me where they're from? Please please don't say Germany. it would just be soooo typical.

the Eldritch clone doesnt look bad though. Does he still have his hair perchance? :innocent:

THE MERRY THOUGHTS are band many consider the German version of SISTERS OF MERCY. Guess there's always the debate going on weather poeple like or hate them. Their site: www.themerrythoughts.com

 I'm pretty shocked on how close his voice sounds to :von:s even in the nuances.

But why oh why is it so hard for German bands to have own innovative ideas (let's put Kraftwerk aside for a moment)
I would consider listening to them if I go on cold turkey from TSOM.

@Ravey, YOU my master are probably to be held responsible. Because everything I know, I know from you. :notworthy:

The Merry Thoughts are one of the most god-awful, derivative and utterly boring bands it has ever been my displeasure to hear. When you add in the p*ss-poor lyrics and the absolutely sad attempt to cop the visual style of the Sisters you end up with something that ought to be pitied, and probably put out of its misery. The phrase 'take a long walk off a short pier' comes to mind as the sort of advice one ought to give to bands of that caliber.
