If enough people buy the albums then they will remain in the charts. As far as I know all albums are in the "chart" on the day of release.
I remember the new Iron Maiden went in at No.6 (i think)... a few days later it wasn't even in the top 40.

But what I was wondering is: can they chart at all as they are re-releases of previous released albums?

For example, if you release a single on 12", 7", Maxi-CD, 2-track CD-single they all count as one release if 80% or more of the titles are identical.

(Yes, I'm vey interested in charts, sale figures, statistics of albums sales. Apart from a personal interest we have a course in school now called International Music Production, and are looking at other countries different organisations like BPI, IFPI, chart systems etcetc.)

I don't think the albums need to chart at all to be profitable. Since they're just reissues they cost very little... and so the record company can expect big profits even if the sale are - relatively - modest.

Edit : and of course they didn't spend much on promotion either... which sometimes cost even more than the album itself !

Good point Eric, 'though everyone seems to have forgetten that today, we are a demographic: 30-40+, earning/expendable income/more leisure time etc.
Record companies have done the math (that's for oor Amerikan viewers) they know enough of us will cough up the dough to make a profit.

So what...?

I've already bought Theatre of Hate's back-catalog about 5 times for a few extra tracks, don't need to do it for every band I like...

Didn't All About Eve release a new album last year?! am sure they did - and I think it had a cover of Aled Jones' Walking In The Clouds on it!

New Model Army's reissues of a couple of years ago were utter shiiiite sadly - the 'rare extra' tracks were b-sides, most of which had already appeared on other compilations, while Thunder and Consolation disc 1 was stripped of three tracks which were included in the original cd to pad out the rarities disc 2!! what a bargain

The NMA releases were done by EMI with no input from the band, so it makes sense that they weren't all the could be.

Thunder and Consolation on vinyl didn't have those three tracks and the original CD was expanded to include them (they were all b-sides from the White Coats EP). The marketing dept said that the albums were restored to their original vinyl tracklisting but that case Marrakesh should've left of Impurity.

Record labels, don't you just love them?

Yay! I just wanted to say: thank you for finding that. It wasn't coming up in my searches... maybe because I added the "The" in "The Sisters of Mercy".

I finally fully believe these reissues are coming out... well, at least, I 99.99% believe it.

But now they come out a day too late for a birthday present.

Hey First is pretty cool IF it is the real deal. Plus it is the first time we (hopefully) get a crisp hearing of the B sides. I'd love to hear a crisp version of Poison Door and On the Wire. The other 2 are not that interessting.
