So I was shown this youtube video and thought "what the hell is this guy on about? I've heard nought about this". Then I googled "torture bill" and got this: Senate Approves Detainee Bill Backed by Bush
Doesn't anyone else find it a little disturbing that this bill is being passed by quickly and with no notice, while that stupid "Foley controversy" gets front page headlines?

Disturbing? Yep, but then that's how America's rulers have always conducted themselves (on the sly), so it's no surprise.

Under this bill, non-US citizens designated enemy combatants are denied basic habeas corpus rights.
But if you are a US citizen, or not an enemy combatant, without habeas corpus, how are you going to mount a legal challenge to your custody?
This law grants GWB the power to lock up who he likes, for as long as he likes, with no appeal to any courts. Can we spell "dictatorship" boys and girls?

The good thing is that this new piece of legislation will probably be deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme court at some point. The bad thing is it will take some time and more than a handful of people can be unjustly imprisoned in the meantime.markfiend wrote: This law grants GWB the power to lock up who he likes, for as long as he likes, with no appeal to any courts. I instantly thought of the enabling act when reading this. Okay, I may be over sensitive here. But that´s the stench I smell from what´s going on.
Spell dictatorship. Spell what you like. But isn´t it apalling where some societies are drifting today? Belarus for example, Russia..
Fear works.
