Cleaning a CD help required!

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Recently payed some hard earned do$h for a boxed set that I'd be chasing for years. 3 discs are fine. One has something dripped on the underside and partially wiped off. Could be the remains of candle wax (in which case the CD is probably fcuked forever re the initial heat contact) wiped off quickly but residue still remains. Could be something else.

Any advice on ways to attempt to clean the underside of CDs?

Currently listening to the disc as I post this and getting slightly angry as at least 3 songs are (temporarily) fcuked. I'm an easy going chap and just want to see if I can rectify the problem myself before I threaten to burn down the sellers house and eat his heart out. Whilst he is still alive. Negative feedback is the least of his worries.

Any advice/tips gratefully received. Danke. :notworthy:

The underside is actually more robust than the label side, believe it or not. Coating on the label side is a whole lot thinner.

So long as you don't scratch it or use any abrasive materials or corrosive fluids, it's probably worth a go - if the CD's f--ked anyway what have you to lose?

I'd use some lens (i.e. spectacles) cleaning kit - your local optician should have a stock. Never tried it meself, mind.

(Although I'd also be inclined to rip the songs that do work to WAV first...)

I use that kinda stuff on my CD's & DVD's, Boots do "Moist Lens Wipes" that clean CD's a & PC screens a treat, never had any problems with using them.

Anything with Isopropol alcohol in it, medical wipes,cassette care kit,video care kit etc etc.If the damage is through to the metal then put it in some clingfilm and freeze it over night,let it thaw at room temp.Rip it with a program called EAC (exact audio copy) available free here .

Step 1: Glue the label side of your CD to a long piece of 2-by-4.
Step 2: Shove playback side into a belt sander.
Step 3: Your CD is now completely fücked.

Thanks to all who suggested the 'wet' cleaning idea. I bought some cleaning solution and it worked a treat. :D :notworthy:

But ... here comes part 2.

The box set is housed in a quad CD case. Looks very similar to a mini quad DVD case but the holder for discs 2 & 3 is a CD tray on a pivot as opposed to a DVD spider thingy. Unfortunately, posties on both sides of the pond contrived to give the 'package' (limited edition box set just shoved in a thin jiffy bag :roll: ) a good battering. Consequently the contents literally fell out into my lap when I opened it. One of the pivots on the middle tray has broken off, as well as some of those nobbly, plastic bits you push the CDs onto. Anyone have any idea where I can get one of these cases? It has to have the plastic insert wraparound for the cover artwork and room for the booklet.

As the CD case was of the 'snap-shut' variety (and nothing could have fallen out in transit), by counting the number of points of damage and the bits of plastic debris in my possession, I have been able to forensicaly establish that the item was already damaged prior to dispatch. Not quite 'near mint' as described.

So, whilst the seller may escape with his heart still pumping, his house is still on my 'things to burn down today' list.

Again, any advice/tips muchly appreciated. Danke. :notworthy:

I'd just go to any proper 'blank CD shop'? Those all have the widest choice of cases around here really...
